Brandon Felder becomes 11th verbal to the Nittany Lions

Felder, BrandonAs if taking a 4-star defensive end recruit out of Maryland wasn’t good enough. Oxon Hill (MD) wide receiver, Brandon Felder became the 11th verbal to Penn State for the class of 2009. The Nittany Lions have been on a recruiting roll in the last few weeks and the only possible criticism was that we were only hauling in great defensive recruits.

Felder’s verbal makes him the 6th recruit out of the state of Maryland for the Lion’s 2009 class. Thats 6 out of 11 verbals all from Maryland!

Well that no longer proves true as Brandon Felder became our 11th verbal adding depth at our wide receiver position in the coming years. By the time of his verbal today, he was holding written offers from Syracuse, Boston College and Maryland in addition to interest from Pittsburgh, West Virginia and Illinois.

Say what you want about Joe Paterno and his unwillingness to visit recruits. If Joe and his staff can continue to haul in recruits while sitting on their sofa, then more power to them.

“Basically when I went up there for a visit, I fell in love with the campus and the surrounding area around the campus,” he said. “I’ve always wanted to go to Penn State.”

As a junior a year ago, Felder caught 40 passes for 942 yards and 11 touchdowns as a junior. He was an all-county selection and an honorable mention all-Metro pick in 2007.

Ok, I will. Fact is Felder looks decent but not great, probably a 3-star given the offer quality. He’d be a plan B guy at OSU or Michigan.

So far I count 3 true blue chip recruits and 8 plan B kids. That’s ok, we’re at C+ level now. We’ll be upper mid-pack but we won’t be recruiting at the same level as the big boys. Michigan has 9 with about 5 or 6 Blue chips. OSU has 15 with what I’m guesstimating as 10 blue chips. Why?

Because we’re rely too much on a few coaches to pull all the weight. Sure, LJ Sr. cleans up in the DC/Balt region but there are only so many blue chip players here. We’re falling behind in our own state. NJ has basically dried up. The rest of Big 10 country has been relatively sparse. I doubt this is going to turn around until “seat-warmer for JayPa as OC” Galen leaves.
