With less than two weeks until Penn State takes on Youngstown State, the mixing and matching of the spring and summer is starting to die down. The starting lineup and rotation is mostly set, and we’re taking a look as just how each position stacks …

Newsome chooses PSU

Submitted by Devon on December 16, 2008 – View Comments

According to FightOnState.com, Michigan de-commit Kevin Newsome has committed to play football for Penn State, filling the void left by Pat Devlin’s departure.

Thank god, by the way.  With Devlin gone to bigger and better places (not), the Nittany Lions were left with just one scholarship quarterback past this year, in Daryll Clark.

Kevin Newsome Jr.

Here are some Newsome highlights, courtesy of Youtube.  He looks to me a little like Pryor, in that he runs well while looking pretty effortless, throws well on the run, but hasn’t done much pure drop-back passing.  He should be a great fit for the Spread HD.

Scout rates Newsome as a 4-star QB, and as the #8 QB in the class of 2009, and touted his arm strength, mobility, and speed.  At 6’3, 213, he’s no midget either.  Rivals gives Newsome 4 stars as well, and ranks him as the #4 dual-threat QB.  He was Penn State’s top choice, and frankly, our only choice.  After Devlin’s sudden departure, Penn State absolutely needed to land Newsome, and they did.  Given our track record with big-time QBs (Henne, Pryor, etc), this was a welcome surprise.

Obviously, there was more good news today, as Joe Paterno signed a 3-year extension to stay at Penn State until he’s 85, according, once again, to FightOnState.com.  Paterno is Penn State and after an 11-1 season, there was no way they were forcing him out.

And a little bit of housekeeping here: NittanyWhiteOut is back for good.  The end of finals and beginning of winter break will give me plenty of time to keep blogging away for you the loyal reader.  Sorry for the lack of continuity up here.  We’ll be your home for Penn State football up and through the Rose Bowl!
