2009 NCAA Fencing Champs

Submitted by Charlie on March 22, 2009 – View Comments

Penn State’s addition to the Big Ten means so much more than just football and basketball.

The fencing team captured their 11th national title after a strong showing on the first day and an equally strong performance on the second day of women’s competition.

Alexsander Ochocki won the title in sabre and Nick Chinman took the foil title for the men.

And with a combined team score of 195 victories (Notre Dame at 2nd with 182 and Ohio State at 3rd with 165), Penn State has already clinched their 11th national fencing title with the women’s title and semi-final games yet to play.

Congratulations to the fencing team. We Are! NCAA Champs!

Hey, people, it’s Devon: I was actually in attendance for this one, and congratulations are also in order to Anastia Ferdman and Doris Willette, who won the women’s championships in epee and foil, respectively, this afternoon.

It was a pretty neat event to be at.  Obviously the fan support isn’t quite as rowdy as it is in the “spectator sports” like basketball or football, but the teams did a great job of supporting each other.

Anastia made a furious comeback to reach the finals.  She was down 12-6, in a match to 15, and rallied to win 15-13.  Doris Willette was down 7-6 with seconds left in the final period, but managed a touch with one second left to send it to overtime.  They both, obviously, carried that momentum into the championship rounds.
