Joe Paterno Spring Teleconference
Rumors of a Chaz Powell injury are untrue. Joe Paterno confirmed today that Chaz Powell was not hurt during practice on Monday.
He didn’t get hurt. He practiced all day yesterday. He may have gotten knocked down and didn’t like getting knocked down. You guys hear too many stories in the dorms. He’s fine.
And as for that cupcake non-conference schedule next year? It seems TCU is to blame this season.
We thought Texas Christian was going to come here. They backed out. They decided that wasn’t in their best interest.
Unlike several Penn State fans who believe we should be playing a non conference schedule of USC, Florida and Texas year in and year out, the current format best serves the needs of a program like Penn State. Sure it would be really exciting to have a team like Texas or USC play at Beaver Stadium occasionally, but why would we want to load up our non-conference schedule when the team has to play out the rigorous Big Ten schedule?
We don’t really need the television exposure that drives teams like Fresno State to play “anyone”, “anywhere”. A Penn State-cupcake game earns a higher rating than any Fresno State game will ever hope to achieve. So why wouldn’t we want to load up on 3 guaranteed wins during what really amounts to exhibition games when the Big Ten conference is our real season?
As much as SEC fans would have bitched and moaned, even a cupcake non conference schedule last season would not have kept Penn State out of the title game had they gone undefeated.
So let’s just embrace our cupcake strategy. Sure we can hope for more, but there is absolutely nothing criminal with a weak non-conference schedule. With Alabama in 2010-11, Virginia in 2012-13, and Nebraska in 2014-15 already in place, let’s just hope none of those teams pull a Syracuse and tank the next few years.
