Penn State 2009 Captains Announced

Submitted by Devon on May 19, 2009 – Comments

Twitter really is a great tool.  Not for us normal folks, who tend to only come off as boring and self-important, but for celebrities and authority figures, it’s a great way to stay in touch with the little people, and pass along pretty cool inside information.

I’m saying this, of course, because Jay Paterno announced just minutes ago that Daryll Clark and Sean Lee will be the 2009 football captains on his Twitter page.

Now, GoPSUSports has a story up about the same thing, but it’s much easier to just check Twitter, right?  The team has downsized its leadership significantly from 2008: last year there were 5 captains, including Lee as an honorary captain, with Derrick Williams, A.Q. Shipley, Josh Gaines, and Anthony Scirrotto holding the positions.  Now, it’s just one on each side of the ball.

How do the guys feel about it?

“I’m honored to be elected a captain,” commented Clark, who was selected first team All-Big Ten in 2008. “I feel like everyone looks to me, but I wanted my teammates to vote for me because they see that I’m working hard and trying to get everyone on the same page of what we have to do to in our plan to win football games.”

“It’s a great honor,” stated Lee, who earned all-conference accolades in 2007. “I’m honored to be following the great captains and leadership we have had in the past. Daryll and I both feel there is a very good leadership within the entire squad right now and that makes it easier for us to keep everyone moving in the same direction.”

Everyone knew these guys would be captains, the only question was whether anyone else would be.  They’re both true leaders, and you needed look no further than Lee’s sideline coaching last year.  Even though he wasn’t playing, he was an integral part of this team.  And as for Daryll, he’s going to have to be the face of the program this year.  He’s as hard a worker as any, and has done more than his fair share of leading by example.

So congratulations are in order to Messrs. Lee and Clark.  Now don’t do anything stupid, please.
