Big Ten Network Awards Show Nominees

Joe Paterno is up for nomination.
The Big Ten Network will air their own Awards Show on Friday, June 19 (9pm air time). They are asking fans to vote for their choices for three awards, and Penn State is represented in each category.
Joe Paterno naturally is a candidate for the best male sports coach. Paterno lead the Penn State football team to a Big Ten title and a trip to the Rose Bowl. Among Paterno’s competition is Michigan State basketball coach Tom Izzo, who guided the Spartans to the NCAA Championship game. Joe Baum (Michigan State’s men’s soccer coach), Tom Brands(Iowa’s wrestling coach) and Kirk Ferentz (Iowa’s football coach) are the other nominees.
Penn State is also represented in the category for best female sports coach. Women’s volleyball coach Russ Rose is a popular pick. The women’s volleyball team captured the national championship this year. Rose’s competition consists of Bob Starkell (Illinois gymnastics coach), Kelly Amonte-Hiller (Northwestern lacrosse), Claire Pollard (Northwestern tennis), and Jim Foster (Ohio State women’s basketball).
While the choices for best finishes will disappoint the Penn State football fan (the only option involving the Nittany Lions in football is the Iowa catastrophe), the NIT champions are an underdog pick, as usual. Penn State’s finish against Illinois is a candidate, and I would have to image that since they do not specify a specific game, that the Big Ten Network is referring to Talor Battle’s buzzer beater at home rather than Penn State’s 38-33 shellacking of the Illini on the road.
