For the sake of full disclosure, I didn’t grow up in a Penn State household. I was a Syracuse fan in my youth and-gasp-a Notre Dame sympathizer. And, because my best friend was a Michigan fan, I sometimes found myself rooting for Ohio State just to annoy him. Granted, as a fan of college football, I knew enough about the tradition and history of Penn State and its program, a base of knowledge upon which I’ve built significantly in the past few years, but was never in tune with the Pitt rivalry. The teams haven’t played during the time that I’ve considered myself a Penn State fan, and I could care less what goes on in Pittsburgh. To me, they’re the same as Arizona or Colorado: programs I just don’t care about. But reading a lot of the gloating that has gone on since the Dieffenbach commitment yesterday, it seems that we’re giving a lot of creedence to “beating Pitt” as if it’s something special, giving respect to a program that, as Deon Butler might put it, doesn’t have the tradition to hold our nuts. So I decided to take a trip into the cyber-wilderness. I visited the Pitt boards on Scout. And I couldn’t believe the level of discourse I found. Seriously, peek in there at your own risk.
Sure, message boards offer the anonymity to say, pretty much, whatever you want without fear of retribution. But that doesn’t mean you should. Look, you’ve got to have some class, even in a case like this. Do what we do at the Penn State boards: claim apathy and say we didn’t need him. Say he wasn’t as good as the experts said. Say we have plenty of depth at the position. Don’t call out a kid’s character and openly root against him.
i don’t hope he does well. you don’t disrepect your dad and his job of decades like that. messed up. i would’ve never done that to my dad (go to his biggest rival) and neither would 99% of the world. go to any other school except there. how does coach D let this happen? really not a cool thing to do.
First of all, you have the pathetic idea that Penn State is Pitt’s biggest rival. WE HAVEN’T PLAYED IN 9 YEARS! GET OVER IT! Maybe you should focus on winning your pitiful conference-something you’ve done a grand total of zero times. And do you really want to keep brining up a rivalry in which you’ve gotten whipped, losing 7 of the last 8?
Oh, but it gets better.
i think it’s a d*** move by the kid. i hate psu. that’s easily 1/3 of what makes a good pitt fan, despite what smilin’ steve says. eff them and i will in no way wish well to this kid. i don’t hope he gets injured but i certainly do hope psu loses every single game they play. and that includes the day he joins the team, which apparently is today. he defected from the corleone’s to the solozzo family.
And if a kid doesn’t want to in his father’s footsteps, well, the only option is to fire the dad.
If I am the AD the guy doesn’t even a week to answer those questions. He would be fired ASAP! Sorry MR. D, If Pitt isn’t a good enough school for your son, you shouldn’t work here. ITs not like Pitt wronged the kid. They offered him Sept 1st, showed him plenty of love, F HIM”
Yup. These Pit fans are absolutely insane. If Alex Kenney chooses not to go to Penn State (his dad is a professor in, I believe, the history department), not only will we not wish the kid harm, or boycott his father, but we’ll wish the kid good luck wherever he goes. And that’s a guarantee.
I hate Michigan. I hate Ohio State. Now, apparently, I hate Pitt. But I couldn’t give a shit about how they perform against anyone other than Penn State. But these Pitt fans are so bitter about this “defection” that they’re taking it out on a 17 year old kid. Real class. I don’t care that they haven’t played in a decade. Now, I hate Pitt. I hope they lose every game. It would suit their fanbase perfectly: losing for a bunch of losers.

miles dieffenbachs father may be a coach at pitt but miles grandfather, great aunt, grandmother an aunt also went to psu so dont critisze his interest in playing for an attending a fine institution! give the kidd a break and allow him to choose the school that he feels is best for him!
My thoughts exactly. These kids are making a decision that will affect the rest of his life whether it be in the pros or on another career path. Just because his father works at one institution doesn't mean he is condemned to that exact path himself. Way to go kid. Welcome to the Nittany Lion family we're glad to have you on board.
