The Commits Keep Rolling In: Kyle Baublitz Makes 8

Even though the Nittany Lions’ 2010 recruiting class promises to be a small one, it sure is filling up quickly.  Today, FightOnState announced that Penn State has landed the committment of defensive end/tight end Kyle Baublitz, who will fill one of two needs for Penn State. Baublitz had an impressive offer sheet, including scholarship offers from BC, West Virginia, Clemson, Florida State, Wisconsin, and, of course, Pittsburgh.

Here’s what they’re saying about the versatile 6’4, 255 pound product of York, PA:

Scout ranks Baublitz as the #43 defensive end, and as a three-star prospect.  Rivals, on the other hand, gives Baublitz a fourth star, ranking him as the #5 tight end in the class.  And I know, it’s not that simple, but I’d rather have recruited the #5 player at his position than the #43.  When it comes to ESPN‘s report, they split the difference:

As a tight end, Baublitz is:

…pretty well-rounded tight end and could project to that position in college. He has good size for the position and is a productive blocker. …He is solid blocking on the move, but can get a little overextended at times. As a receiver he has good hands and is a solid target in the short-to-intermediate range….He will not wow you in any one phase of the position, but does everything you would ask of him well as a tight end and could be a solid and productive player at the position in college.

And as an end:

… On defensive we see promise at defensive end…He is a physical tackler. He really gets some space to read and react as a linebacker in high school so there may be a little adjustment time needed at the end spot, but the tools seem to be there to make the move.

Overall:

Depending on needs Baublitz could play on either side of the ball. Tight end may be the safer choice, but defensive end presents more upside in our opinion.

I’ll defer to the coaching staff on this one, who appear to want Baublitz on the defensive side of the ball.

“Coach Larry Johnson was my recruiter and he is just a great guy and a great coach. They want me to be a defensive end.”

So the class is at least halfway full by now, and so far, there has been no drop-off in talent.  They started this class with a bang, in Mike Hull and PJ Jones, arguably the top two prospects in the state of Pennsylvania, and have kept the momentum going, nabbing just about everyone they want in the state.  Now it’s time to reach out to the familiar grounds, to New York, Maryland, and New Jersey, and maybe spread the reach a little bit for a top national prospect like Marcus Lattimore to make this class truly remarkable.
