Numbers, Polls and Voters: Week 5
Do you know how tough it is to squeeze an interactive table with 60 voters and 25 teams into a post? Let me tell you, its tough. But I was able to deliver and the end result? Well take a look for yourself.
Selecting each Top 25 team will resort the table according to that team’s position in each of the 60 AP voters ballot in descending order. It provides for faster analysis without painstakingly going through each and every individual ballot.
Example? Clicking on Cal still fresh off the throttling at Oregon last week and currently in #24 in the overall AP poll can show us that:
a) while AP voter Paul Arnett of the Honolulu Star-Bulletin clearly did not even watch the game between the Bears and Ducks (seeing as it’s Hawaii and all), did not even bother to check the box score to see the absolute humiliation Cal suffered to Oregon. If he had, he had to be out of his mind to award that very Cal team the #10 spot in his ballot.
b) Barker Davis of the Washington Times, Tom Hart of CBS College Sports Network, Desmond Connor of the Hartford Courant (CT), Teddy Feinberg of Las Cruces Sun-News (NM) , and oh yes Paul Arnett of the Honolulu Star-Bulletin left Oregon off their Top 25 altogether while Cal remains on their ballots.
c) Craig James of ABC (yes, the one with the annoying Southern accent to compliment ESPN’s new obsession with bad Southern music) left the Ducks 4 spots below the Bears. Doesn’t working at ABC force you to actually pay attention to the games actually going on? Or does he simply read off the teleprompter without a second thought?
Talk about journalistic integrity. And these people get paid for their work. I know its hard to find journalists who watch as many games as most college football fans do, but couldn’t the AP at least find voters who actually care enough to check the box scores?

Miami 33 / Georgia Tech 17
Remember when Miami completely shut down Georgia Tech’s triple option attack to the tune of a 33-17 win that was all but over by the fourth quarter?
Ryan Finley of the Arizona Daily Star, Scott Wolf of the Los Angeles Daily News, Pete DiPrimio of Fort Wayne News-Sentinel, Wade Denniston of the Logan Herald-Journal (Utah), Bob Condotta of The Seattle Times, and yes, our favorite voter without a clue in Week 4, Paul Arnett of the Honolulu Star-Bulletin clearly forgot. All 6 voters had Miami ranked lower than the Yellow Jackets or completely left them out of their Top 25 altogether.
Iowa 21 / Penn State 10
Iowa walked into a White House in prime time national television and methodically beat Penn State at their own game of field position and turnover battles. No controversy, no disputes, right?
Not unless you are Marcus Fuller of St Paul Pioneer Press (MN), Sal Interdonato of the Times Herald-Record (NY), Jeff Gravley of WRAL-TV (NC), Jay G Tate of the Montgomery Advertiser (AL), Desmond Connor of The Hartford Courant (CT), and of course Paul Arnett of the Honolulu Star-Bulletin, who all decided the Hawkeyes 11 point victory over Penn State on the road in prime time was not enough evidence that the the Hawkeyes are a better team than the Lions.
Dunce Voter of the Week

You really have to wonder. Just scanning over Paul Arnett’s ballot, I wonder if he even has access to the Internet or television out there in Hawaii.
I understand there are lots of bad ballots out there for Week 4, but Paul Arnett’s ballot reminds you of the kid in class who obviously forgot about the math homework and turned in a bunch of numbers listed hoping no one would notice. Voting California over Oregon, Georgia Tech over Miami, Iowa over Penn State wins him that special spot in the corner of the class. The Honolulu Star-Bulletin sure are getting their money’s worth when the sole AP voter representing the Hawaii region of the poll considers his ballot like a joke, or at least votes like it is.

Oh come on, Charlie. You kill these guys, but you yourself ranked Georgia over Oklahoma over Houston
CONSISTENCY!
Yeah but Georgia was beaten by Oklahoma State, then managed to beat Arizona State this past week. If they had just lost this past weekend to Oklahoma State. I would have done exactly what I actually did in the poll following that very head to head matchup, ranked Oklahoma State below Georgia.
Even in this week's poll I have Miami above Georgia Tech despite their loss to Virginia Tech who is looking more like a Top 10 team every week. And Penn State is clearly below Iowa in this week's poll because, well they just beat them. I understand your insistence of consistency, and while it's tough I do try to follow it as best I can, especially ranking teams accordingly based on the past weekend's head to head matchups.
Charlie brings up a good point. These AP voters are paid to do their jobs which includes filling out their ballots and their vote is one of the most visible reflections of college football perception to coaches and Harris voters whose ballots actually matter in the BCS rankings. So you can't blame him or Pollspeak in holding AP voters to a higher standard.
Agreed. The blogpoll reflects people who probably watch alot more games than reporters covering specific conferences or teams, but AP voters are actually getting paid. Their votes should be taken more seriously. I can forgive voters for moving teams back above/below others that have beaten them in weeks past if they earn an impressive victory or suffer a humiliating upset like Miami/Georgia Tech or USC/Ohio State, but not the week immediately afterwards unless the underdog is clearly not Top 25 material. But leaving Iowa below Penn State is plain stupid. They either didn't watch the game, or didn't do their research.
Great work putting the votes into a single table
