I don’t want to talk about football.

http://crispinandcream.files.wordpress.com/2009/06/nit1.jpgSo it’s probably a good thing that basketball season is finally upon us, as the Nittany Lions look to build upon one of their best seasons of all-time, a 27-win, NIT Championship season that saw Ed DeChellis lead this team to new heights.

Over the past couple weeks, we’ve focused on football, but rest assured, NittanyWhiteOut will be continuing our basketball coverage throughout the season.  To that effect, here are the stories we’ve missed out on over the past week or two:

  • Freshman Bill Edwards will miss the first month or so of the season with a torn MCL.  You’ll remember Edwards was a very late addition to this year’s recruiting class, and as the reigning Ohio senior player of the year, brings a very polished game to Penn State despite his young age.  At 6′5, 235, he’s got a Big Ten body, and had been drawing rave reviews before the injury.
  • I, for one, welcome our new insect overlords

Talor Battle is no longer our little secret.  This has been a big offseason for Battle, even since coming back from the World University Games this summer, where the USA placed third, and Battle led the team in scoring.  More recently, he’s been named to the preseason All-Big Ten team. and the Naismith Award Watch List.
  • Jamelle Cornley’s Ukrainian expedition didn’t go so well, but it’s not like basketball is no longer in his future.  Cornely was selected in the third round of last week’s NBDL draft, by the Fort Wayne Mad Ants, who, by the way, officially have the scariest logo ever.
  • Penn State took on Slippery Rock in an exhibition last Friday, and avoided pulling a LeMoyne.  In fact, it was quite the opposite, as Penn State took advantage of their lesser competition, storming out to a 19-0 lead, and never looked back, winning 86-51.  Battle led Penn State with 16 points and 10 rebounds, to go along with 6 assists, and Chris Babb added 12 and 9.  Perhaps the most impressive statline goes to Sasa Borovnjak, who put in 10 points to go along with 4 rebounds and a block in just 14 minutes.

That’s all for now, but over the course of the week, we’ll have an emphasis on the upcoming hoops season, taking you up to this Friday’s tip-off with Penn.
