44 for 44: A.Q. Shipley

Penn State has produced plenty of quality offensive linemen–and that’s pretty much a given when you consider just how solid the running game has been just about every year in the past 50. But only one Penn Stater ever received the highest honor for his …

Last week’s ballot

Hey, gang. Sorry we’ve been so sporadic with the updates.  I can’t speak for Charlie or Kevin, but I slipped into a tryptophan induced coma after Thanksgiving dinner, and just woke up about 6 hours ago.

Because it’s so late in the week, we’ll just give you some bullet points about this week’s blogpoll.

The SEC Sucks: Okay, that’s a stretch, but The SEC is Incredibly Top Heavily and Lacking in Depth didn’t have the same ring to it.  After Florida and Alabama, there isn’t another really good team in the whole conference.  You’ll notice we have LSU down at 21, and while they’re #13 in the BCS rankings, they don’t even come close to passing the eye-test.  Since the computers can’t register margin of victory, they get by with a 8-point win over Louisiana Tech, a 4-point win over Mississippi State, and an 8-point win over Washington.  After watching them struggle against Arkansas, it’s clear that Jordan Jefferson is a mediocre, at best, QB, and I’m salivating for a chance to beat them in the Capital One Bowl.  Which we’ll be going to.  Almost certainly.

The Big XII Sucks: Texas and…nobody else.  Nebraska sneaks into the ballot at 22, but they’ve been so up-and-down all year that I don’t know what to make of them.  We’ve ranked them as high as #16 (I think), but after getting curbstomped 31-10, at home, to Texas Tech, they’ve taken a seat.  Now, they’ve won what might be the worst division ever, and get the courtesy of getting beat up by Texas on Saturday.  And other voters-how the hell can you have Oklahoma State ranked, much less at 20, AFTER BEING SHUT OUT 27-0 TO A 7-5 OKLAHOMA TEAM?

The ACC Sucks: I think you guys are starting to get the hang of this.  After clinching spots in the ACC Championship Game, Georgia Tech and Clemson drew matchups with their biggest out-of-conference rivals last week, and both laid a massive egg.  So much for taking things one game at a time.  I really have no idea why I’m so lenient with dropping them a combined 7 spots, but it’s probably because I think they’re still good teams.  Nonetheless, you did a bad job representing your conference, GT and Clemson. Be ashamed of yourselves.

The Big East Kinda Sucks?: We’ve had two Big East teams ranked in the top 10 for the last few weeks, and even with Pitt falling to their rivals, West Virginia, in the backyard brawl, they’ll still stay in the top 12 here.  But Cincy takes a slight drop after struggling with Illinois, and West Virginia sneaks in after that upset of Pitt.  I’m actually very excited for the de facto Championship game this weekend, because the two teams are just so different.  And sorry, Bill S., but NWO is rooting for Cincy.

The Pac-10 Doesn’t Suck: You know this by now, but with USC earning their place back on the ballot, and Cal getting on because finding 25 teams is pretty damn hard, the Pac-10 now makes up fully 1/5 of our Blogpoll ballot, and Toby Gerhart would be NittanyWhiteOut’s Heisman selection.  Stanford has been, simply, a joy to watch this year, and as much as I have an unrequited love for white running backs, Toby Gerhart is the real deal.  I’ve become a believer in Jim Harbaugh, and I just pray that Michigan doesn’t steal him away from the Cardinal, because that would instantly restore all the credibility that RichRod lost.

The Big Ten is Whatever: This is what you get for ending your season so early Big Ten.  Two sentences. Well, addendum: I like Northwestern and Mike “Franz” Kafka. So I rank them at #18. Sorry to offend you, Brian.

Dropped Out: Mississippi (#17), North Carolina (#18), Utah (#19), Oklahoma State (#21), Temple (#25).

To those voters who like to claim they are adhering to "head to head" matchups. It is not ridiculous to rank a team that has struggled down the stretch below one that has continued to play consistently. Iowa has lost 2 of their last 3 and looked inept in their final game against Minnesota. I know they beat Penn State head to head, but in college football where transitive properties do not apply, when do you toss out head to head (early on in the season) and go with each team's recent performance instead? Stewart Mandel's Power Rankings does exactly this and I don't understand why most voters don't follow suit.
