44 for 44: A.Q. Shipley

Penn State has produced plenty of quality offensive linemen–and that’s pretty much a given when you consider just how solid the running game has been just about every year in the past 50. But only one Penn Stater ever received the highest honor for his …

At 0-6, only one question remains:

Why the hell were the Lions 10-point favorites for tonight’s game, against Indiana?  I mean, seriously, does this look like a team that could beat anybody by ten points?  If you bet on Penn State, that’s money you deserve to have lost. You’re either blind, or way, way too optimistic.  After the latest suckfest, a 67-61 loss that won’t change Penn State’s last-in-the-Big-Ten scoring numbers, and a game in which, once more, the missed free throws (7) outnumbered the margin of defeat (6, for the math-challenged), I can’t imagine that there are too many left on the “DeChellis needs more time” bandwagon.

There’s not much else that can be said about tonight’s suck-fest.  If you want a real recap, go somewhere else.  The amount of effort I’m putting into this one mirrors the amount of effort everyone not named Talor Battle (and, surprisingly, Andrew Ott) put into tonight’s game. But we’ve now gone through the easy part of our schedule without a win. We were dealt a tough schedule, with Indiana and Iowa appearing just, one time each, and those are the two next-worst teams in the Big Ten.  And, obviously, we’ve already faced, and lost both games.  The next worst team is probably Michigan, and they already beat us at the BJC.

There are still 2 more games each against Ohio State, Purdue, and Michigan State.  We still travel to Wisconsin and Northwestern, and whenever you’re counting a game against Northwestern as a loss, you know you really suck. It ain’t getting any easier, and it can’t get much worse. What’s the best case scenario, 3-15?  Is it sickening that 3 conference wins is a “best case scenario?” Yup. Is 0-18 still very much a possibility? Yup. Could any coach do any worse? Nope.

The future’s so bright, I gotta wear shades.

    From the CDT:

Penn State recruit Peter Alexis scored a school-record 41 points in Holy Redeemer’s 71-60 win over Hazleton on Friday.
  • DeChellis lack of coaching actually comes out more with how much the team relies on Battle. In basketball, one great player can make others better more than in any other sport. With PSU, it just doesn't happen. The rest of the team watchs him and does little to support. Not fun right now.
  • I received the following text after the game "Are you guys going to win any games in the Big Ten this year?" That was from my brother, an Indiana university alumnus. Sadly after last night, I can actually put money on the answer being no.

The current disappointment reflects largly on the emotional investment nittany nation has made in the men's BB program after last year. All the offseason talk was about an improved OOC schedule and building on the NIT championship. But little did anyone anticipate what the losses of Cornley, Pringle and Morressy would mean to the current squad. All three were reliable heavy guns when points were desparately needed. We only have one big gun this season and that is 5'-11" PG Talor Battle.

I've known and seen it with my own eyes ever since the '07 season when Geary Claxton went down, that role players Jones, Brooks and Jackson could not be counted on in similar fashion for points, not back then nor now. Every once in a while one of them will have a productive night, but those are few and far between. The biggest recruiting bust is obviously Brooks who had four stars next to his name coming out of HS in KY. He still retains tremendous atheletic ability, but a sparse blocked shot here and put back there are simply not worth the investment. After Claxton ended his career with a knee injury we hoped that one of these guys would develop, step in and replace. It never did happen.

So here we are, blaming last year's Big Ten coach of the year and lamenting the state of the cellar dwellar program. I cannot see the administration firing the coach one year after an NIT championship, which he deserves credit for, in the same sense that her deservs credit for recruiting Cornley and Battle, but also the blame for recruiting the trio mentioned above. I'll tell you what though; I don't know how easy or difficult it is to recruit prep talen to Penn State, 'cause I've never tried it. It seems we're relageted compete for under the radar talent and hope for the best.

In similar fashion, can Tim Curly recruit a big name coach to come to PSU? What would it take to lure someone here who obviously already leads a big time program. Unless it's obscene money, i don't see it happening. That leaves a mid major guy just like ED with whom you'll end up rolling the dice again. But hey, if you gotta have change, they get change. Personally, I reserve judgment until I see if there's any growth in current freshmen, Edwards and Frazier and witness Talor and Taran playing on the same court together.

You almost have to feel for Talor Battle. He tries so hard, but it's still not enough to overcome the lack of effort by the other guys on the court. DeChellis' inability to call timeouts during momentum shifts is staggering for a head coach. But if Cael Sanderson's hire is any indication of this athletic department's commitment to winning, I still have hope that once DeChellis is let go, money won't be a factor in our next hire. I personally would recommit to season tickets and fundraising on behalf of the basketball program should the school go after the right guy.

Its very possible we do not win for the remainder of the season. If we can't beat Indiana or Iowa, what makes anyone believe we can beat anyone else? I had such high hopes going into this season... The only positive news is, I like the throwback uniforms they're wearing against Minnesota. They are very cool looking.
