Coulter's planned appearance at the University of California, Berkeley on April 27 has been canceled because of security concerns.

A planned speech by conservative commentator Ann Coulter at the home of the free speech movement has been canceled out of protest fears.

While Registered Student Organizations like yours are independent from the University, and have the right to invite whoever they'd like to speak here, the campus retains responsibility for ensuring safety and security during such events.

Coulter said in her email that she is still planning on speaking at the university, and the spokesman for Young America's Foundation, a conservative national group that helped organize the event, said Coulter is planning to speak on April 27.

Berkeley officials said that they were not canceling Coulter's appearance because of her controversial views.

"Unfortunately, (campus police) determined that, given now active security threats, it is not possible to assure that the event could be held successfully", according to a letter sent to the student group.

News organizations obtained a copy of the letter Wednesday.

Last week, posters went up on campus threatening disruption of the event and officials also found chatter on various websites indicating the possibility of planned violence, Mogulof said. One of the primary lessons learned here is that before a student organization commits to hosting an event on a specific date, we need to first work together to determine if a suitable venue is available at that time.

The school is anxious about violent protests: Berkeley made national news in February and again on Saturday when far-right and far-left demonstrators clashed in physical confrontations that led to several arrests.

Coulter posted eight tweets in a span of 17 minutes after the AP and others reported the cancellation Wednesday. The groups putting on the event are not sharing where Coulter will speak, but said they are looking at several locations, including on campus.

Group members have stressed that they have "no intention of acceding to these unconstitutional acts". The administration pointed to the radical left's riots outside a lecture by Milo Yiannopoulos as the main reason why it wasn't "safe" to hold the Horowitz and Coulter lectures on campus.
