Florida state senator makes public apology for racist remarks

Sen. Frank Artiles lamented Sen. Frank Artiles lamented"six n--rs during a shocking barroom rant on Monday night

"I was appalled to hear that one Senator would speak to another in such an offensive and reprehensible manner", he said. Gibson and Perry Thurston on Wednesday, who was sitting at the same table as Gibson when Artiles made the remarks.

Sen. Perry Thurston on Wednesday filed the complaint to remove Artiles.

The Florida Times-Union reported that Artiles' tirade apparently stemmed from being upset that Gibson had voted against bills he sponsored and had asked critical questions about the measures.

While Artiles appeared remorseful while asking Gibson, Thurston, Negron and the entire Senate for forgiveness, he was defiant when asked by reporters if he intends to step down. "He said, 'If it wasn't for these six niggers", Gibson told the Herald. At one point, Artiles began complaining about what he characterized as the failed leadership of Senate President Joe Negron, whom he called "a pussy".

A Florida state senator is expected to apologize publicly for using racial slurs and insults in a private after-hours conversation with African-American colleagues. "I don't guess that he does, or any other woman that he cares about, or any other people that he cares about", she said, adding that Artiles' explanation for his use of a word that is so heavily charged for African Americans put a "little ding" in his show of remorse.

The legislative black caucus is seeking to have Artiles removed from office.

Democratic Senator Oscar Braynon II of Fort Lauderdale drew a connection between the two incidents.

It's not clear who Artiles was referring to with his slurs.

Artiles later apologized and told Gibson and Thurston that his use of the n-word was not meant to be insulting.

It wasn't the only offensive terms he used during Monday night's conversation — all of which Democratic Sen. The Florida Democratic party has called for his resignation, while the state Republican party chairman did not, referring to Artiles' racist and sexist harassment of a colleague as a "truly unfortunate statement". There's no excuse, nor will I offer one. "My comments to you are the most regretful of all because they injured you personally". Artiles denied it, Thurston said - but urged by Thurston, apologized.

Further, Negron himself blasted Artiles for making the comments. Racial slurs and profane, sexist insults have no place in conversation between Senators and will not be tolerated while I am serving as Senate President.

"We have somebody in Tallahassee that don't even respect the black community", said another citizen Deltravis Williams.

"His despicable act of contrition was something that, I've lived here for 37 years, and I do not accept him as my representative", protester Fred Frost said.
