Patriots, Trump Slam NYT Over Tweet of Team Photos
21 April, 2017, 04:08
The New York Times tweeted out a photo Wednesday comparing the differing crowd sizes from the team's trip in 2015 with President Barack Obama and its Wednesday meeting with President Donald Trump. The photo makes it clear there are more people in 2015 than on Wednesday.
President Donald Trump stands with New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick, left, New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft, right, and members of the New England Patriots during a ceremony on the South Lawn of the White House in Washington, Wednesday, April 19, 2017, where he honored the Super Bowl Champion New England Patriots for their Super Bowl LI victory.
The Patriots later said that the photos shown were misleading, and took to Twitter to explain the difference in the two photos. Team spokesman Stacey James told The Boston Globe that the White House chose to have the staff sit this time. "In 2015, over 40 football staff were on the stairs".
Photos shot by Getty Images appear to show hundreds of additional spectators taking in Trump's congratulatory speech from the White House lawn, which provided the president with the ammunition he needed.
"The last time the #Patriots won two Super Bowls in three years, 36 players visited the White House".
There is also a history of players skipping a White House visit, although a larger group of Pats players opted out this time for political reasons, i.e., their antipathy towards Trump, perhaps owing to pressure from activist groups.
Some players reportedly declined to attend the White House ceremony because they didn't want to be seen with Trump. Both those visits were when George W. Bush was president.
The New England Patriots' rivalry with NY has spilled into politics. James said that one reason substantially fewer players showed up this time as compared to 2015 was that some veteran players did not see the need to go twice in three years.
