Stockholm truck attack suspect was facing deportation

Swedish media: Truck crashes into Stockholm store, 3 dead Swedish authorities say truck attack suspect held

Ten of those injured were still being treated in hospital, with two people in intensive care and another two in a serious condition.

Swedish police have only identified the suspect as a 39-year-old man from Uzbekistan.

"We know that he showed interest for extremist organizations like IS", police chief Jonas Hysing told reporters, referring to the Islamic State group. Their main focus at this point is looking into what type of contacts he had, and if they were connected to any previous or potentially upcoming terrorist attacks.

"The Migration Agency rejected it in June 2016 and also decided that he was to be expelled", Hysing added. He was known to security services and, reportedly, had a registered address in Sweden.

Evensson said authorities had questioned over 500 people in the investigation so far. The driver fled after the attack but police arrested a 39-year-old man from Uzbekistan on Saturday morning.

As details emerge about what may have inspired the deadly attack that left four people dead and more than a dozen injured, investigators are scouring the suspect's mobile phone and social media accounts.

The crash was near the site of a December 2010 attack in which Taimour Abdulwahab, a Swedish citizen who lived in Britain, detonated a suicide bomb, killing himself and injuring two others. He later vowed that he would not give in to attempts to destroy democracy.

The IS also claimed responsibility for a truck attack that killed 86 people in Nice, France, in July 2016 during a Bastille Day festival, as well as another truck attack that killed 12 people at a Christmas market previous year in Berlin.

"Clear similarities", this according to Eliasson, were found between the Stockholm attack and that of London's Westminster Parliament near the end of March.

The suspect was nabbed after police released images taken from CCTV footage.

Sweden has stepped up its security, with approximately 100 police officers deployed from across the country to assist in Stockholm.

Meanwhile, a vigil is taking place this afternoon in Stockholm for those who were killed in the lorry attack.

The Ahlens department store apologized "for a bad decision" in a statement on its Facebook page.

Many in Sweden were shocked by the attack, questioning whether Swedish society - considered democratic and egalitarian - had failed in some way.
