British Airways cancels all flights from Heathrow, Gatwick

Debra Rodriguez | 28 May, 2017, 02:51

The airline urged passengers booked on those flights not to go those airports. Last month Germany's Lufthansa and Air France suffered a global system outage which prevented them from boarding passengers.

Heathrow Airport said it was "working closely" with BA to solve the issue.

Bill Curtis, senior vice president and chief scientist at CAST, said: "Airline computers juggle multiple systems that must interact to control gate, reservations, ticketing and frequent fliers".

British Airways (BA) has cancelled all flights from Heathrow and Gatwick until 18:00 BST because of computer problems.

One passenger tweeted: "Stuck on a British Airways plane at Belfast, going nowhere".

Trump scolds fellow NATO leaders: Spend more for military
As he tried to reach the front of the group, Montenegro's Prime Minister Dusko Markovic was standing in his way. Trump neither apologized nor paid attention to the European leader after he barged past him.

Some say they have been unable to check in using the mobile app, while others said they missed their flights because of the technical problems.

The airline said it had found "no evidence that it's a cyber attack".

Other airlines flying in and out of Heathrow and Gatwick are unaffected. "No way we'll make our Vegas flight", wrote one passenger David Raine wrote on Twitter.

The IT system failure came as many Britons headed overseas for the long weekend and half-term school holidays. BA said it expects London-bound flights to land as scheduled on Sunday, but thousands of travellers are stranded at the two major airports. "Manpower, dealing with the backlog of aircraft out of position, parking spaces for the aircraft -it's a challenge and a choreographic nightmare", he said. There were reports that hundreds of bags were left unattended as BA staff tried to control the situation. In August 2016, Delta planes around the world were grounded when an electrical component failed and led to a shutdown of the transformer that provides power to the airline's data center. "All of our check-in and operation systems have been affected and we have cancelled all flights from Heathrow and Gatwick for today". We will continue to provide information on ba.com, Twitter and through airport communication channels.

All of BA's check-in and operational systems have been affected by the issue, including the airline's customer service phone lines and rebooking function.
