Dan Patrick Threatens To Force Special Session

Dan Patrick Threatens To Force Special Session Dan Patrick Threatens To Force Special Session

KVUE News reached out to Patrick's office but did not get a reply. The first is the state budget, the second a "sunset" bill needed to keep key agencies like TXDOT running.

"If we must go to a special session, I will respectfully ask the governor to add both of these bills - plus other legislation he has voiced support for - in that special session call", Patrick said during a press conference at the Capitol.

The GOP-controlled state Senate approved the bill Wednesday, and it cleared the House last month.

The debate over the property tax bill has been contentious, particularly in the House, where local leaders pushed back against efforts to limit how much property tax revenues cities and counties can collect without voter approval.

It is scheduled for a House vote on Thursday. Bill sponsors say processing a single one can cost up to $2,000.

Texas' lieutenant governor on Wednesday threatened to push for a special legislative session if state representatives do not pass a measure that would limit bathroom access for transgender people before the current session ends on May 29. "If the bills don't pass in the special and they're blocked again, I will ask the governor to call us back again and again and again".

"We are in the process of identifying the priorities of what must be passed, the priorities of the House, the Senate and the governor", Abbott said. "We considered all voters", he said. "It's just a matter of getting everybody on the same page".

The move by Republican Dan Patrick, who sets the legislative agenda in the state Senate where the bill was approved, comes as he is trying to gain the upper hand with the House over budget and tax policy positions.

Split along party lines, the Texas Senate on Wednesday gave initial approval to a bill that would end straight-party voting, requiring every candidate on state ballots to be chosen individually.

HB 25 faces one final vote before passing the Senate.

All remaining Senate bills must be voted out of House committees by Saturday, and must be voted on by the full House for the first time by May 23. "I am grateful that the Senate will work with us to address them".

Straus sent the letter to Patrick Monday. Though both are Republicans, Patrick is a staunch conservative while Straus is more moderate on some issues. The Legislature is constitutionally required to pass a budget bill in order to fund the state government, but the law does not require it to do so during the regular session.
