Jim Bunning, who showed much of the same combativeness as a US congressman as he had done during his Hall of Fame career as a hard-throwing pitcher in baseball's major leagues, died at the age of 85, his son said on Saturday.

"Heaven got its No. 1 starter today". Deuser said he was notified about the death by Bunning's family. The AP confirmed the death with Bunning's former chief of staff, Jon Deuser. It was the first regular-season flawless game in baseball since 1922 - and the first in the National League since Providence's John Montgomery Ward blanked the Bisons on June 17, 1880 (Yes, the Bisons were in the National League then). It was the first flawless game pitched in the National League since 1880.

On July 27, 2009, Bunning announced he would not run again for his Senate seat in 2010, endorsing his successor, current GOP Senator Rand Paul.

While he won plenty of headlines as a baseball standout, the broad, tall and white-haired Bunning was more of a backup in Congress. He was elected to represent Kentucky's 4th district in 1987 and served for 12 years before his election to the Senate in 1999.

Bunning, a Kentucky Republican, turned to politics after his playing career and became the only member of the Baseball Hall of Fame to serve in Congress. Jim Bunning, R-Ky. speaks on Capitol Hill in Washington.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, his longtime colleague from Kentucky, remembered Bunning on Saturday as someone who led a "long and storied life". Jim Bunning, a Hall of Fame pitcher who parlayed his sports fame into a political career as an uncompromising advocate for conservative causes, has died. "This Hall of Famer will long be remembered for many things, including a flawless game, a larger-than-life personality, a passion for Kentucky, and a loving family". Bunning was inducted into the Hall in Cooperstown, NY., in 1996. While spending most of his career with the Tigers and Phillies, he also had stints with the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Los Angeles Dodgers.

He played baseball professionally from 1955 to 1971, mostly with Detroit and Philadelphia.

The side-arming Bunning enjoyed one of the greatest days of his career in Shea Stadium, firing a flawless game against the Mets on Father's Day 1964 - with his wife and daughter Barbara in the stands.
