Half-billion Windows 10 devices, but PC slump stunts growth

Rosalie Gross | 13 May, 2017, 10:01

The firm also pledged to roll out Cortana in all its products including Xbox, Windows, Bing and Office. Here all the major updates Microsoft announced at Build 2017.

Microsoft launched new Azure data and cloud services it said will help developers quickly modernise existing apps, new AI and Azure services that allow any developer to more easily build intelligent apps, with understanding and natural user interaction capabilities, and showcased new data, IoT edge and AI services built for a future with an intelligent cloud and intelligent edge. The company used its main keynote to focus entirely on developers. In past years, it was all about consumer technology and updates to consumer products like Windows 10 and Surface devices.

Microsoft has announced that Windows 10 is now running on 500 million devices. Announced past year, the framework now has more than 130,000 registered developers. And by judging by this announcement, we're guessing it still won't meet that original 2018 deadline. That's significant progress, though it's still much slower than Windows 10's growth when Microsoft was offering free upgrades for older machines.

ZDNet noted the 500-million milestone is the first numbers-related announcement in more than seven months, and that Windows 10's growth pace has slowed significantly in the last couple years, though historical comparisons of such milestones are hard. At the end of September previous year it gave notice that it had reached 400 million active users - so it has added 100 million in under 8 months. Microsoft has also added a series of new core capabilities into Graph, including Delta queries and "custom data". New Graph APIs were made available to developers, including APIs from SharePoint and Planner.

Back in the cloud arena, Azure Batch AI Training is a new Azure offering, now available in private preview only, that will allow developers and data scientists to configure an environment with parameters and run their models against multiple CPUs, multiple GPUs and eventually field-programmable gate arrays. HP will integrate Cortana into its devices, while Intel will focus on reference platforms.

Developers can also publish to new channels including Bing, Cortana and Skype for Business, and implement Microsoft's payment request API for fast and easy checkout in their bots. The Cortana Skills Kit has also been launched which basically gives developers the ability to create skills - or borrow them from other devices - and train Cortana to use them. This should drastically improve Cortana and make any upcoming Cortana hardware more useful. Instead the company has signed deals with HP and Intel to bring more built-in Cortana-powered products to market.

In another move that is bound to get developers salivating, Microsoft launched its Visual Studio coding platform for Mac.

Shum said Microsoft now offers 29 different cognitive services to developers, making it possible for them to incorporate AI capabilities in new apps "with just a few lines of code". As for programming languages, the C# and F# languages are supported.

Also, a new PowerPoint add-in called Presentation Translator, which leverages Microsoft's Translation APIs, was featured, allowing real-time translation to multiple languages during any presentation.
