ICRC: Prisoner family visits are Israel's obligation under worldwide law

Christy Curtis | 08 May, 2017, 06:07

Others held up signs saying: "The will of our prisoners is stronger than your terrorism".

Palestinians say the mass hunger strike is an attempt to improve conditions inside the jails and gain more family visits.

Israel blames the violence on incitement by the Palestinian leadership and says that at least 164 of the Palestinians killed by had launched stabbing, shooting or auto ramming attacks.

"This occupation has violated our cities, villages, refugee camps, holy places and Jerusalem, and it arrests dozens of Palestinians daily and subject (s) them to torture and ill treatment, including during interrogation, and falsely accuses them and adopts arbitrary decisions against them through their legitimate courts, civilian and military, and conducts policies and actions that constitute grave breaches under global law and crimes for which those responsible must be held accountable", Barghouti continued.

Promotional materials tout the buildings' proximity to Manhattan and note that the project will create more than 6,000 jobs. No doubt the word has gone out to rich, tapped-in Chinese investors looking to plant some roots in the United States too.

"Barghouti is a murderer and hypocrite who urged his fellow prisoners to strike and suffer while he ate behind their back".

The prisoners are entering the 20th day of their hunger strike, which began on April 17. Israeli officials have dismissed the strike as a bid by Barghouti to burnish his credentials in an internal Palestinian power struggle. He says the information comes from lawyers who recently visited the strikers.

The incident on Sunday was the latest in a 19-month-long period of sporadic street attacks by Palestinians against Israelis, and the bustling Damascus Gate entrance to Jerusalem's walled Old City where it occurred has seen many attacks.

"The hunger strike is not about the condition of the prisoners' detention but only about Marwan Barghouti's very own political interests following the post-Abu Mazen period", Gilad Erdan, Israel's Public Security Minister, stated.
