Rohtak: A panel of doctors here on Tuesday made a decision to abort the foetus of the 10-year-old girl, who was found to be five months pregnant after allegedly being raped repeatedly by her stepfather. Indian law does not permit abortions after 20 weeks unless doctors can prove that the mother's life is at risk.
A panel of doctors had to decide whether the girl from Rohtak in Northern India should be allowed to terminate her pregnancy after she was forced to take her case to court, the Daily Mail reports. Local reports say the stepfather had warned the girl to keep quiet.
The district court here left it to the medical board of the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences to take a call on the matter. The girl was reportedly often left at home during the day when her mother was at work. The little girl's request for abortion is now in the hands of justice. In recent months, the Supreme Court of India has received several demands, some of the female victims of rape who want to end the pregnancy after the 20th week.
The mother had alleged that the girl's stepfather had threatened the victim with dire consequences if she dared to disclose it to anyone.
