Inspired Alves leads Juventus into Champions League final

Vera Richards | 10 May, 2017, 02:20

Juventus reached their second Champions League final in three seasons after a 2-1 win at home to Monaco on Tuesday night secured a 4-1 victory on aggregate.

Subasic denied Paulo Dybala one-on-one but was left flailing when he punched the resulting corner onto Alves' right boot and the three-time Champions League victor returned with interest, smashing a laser-guided volley into the net. Leonardo Jardim's side will come out the blocks looking to go out on the offensive but the Italians will hold firm for the first 20 minutes, much like they did in the first leg. It would take something huge for Monaco to progress from the position they are in.

Prediction: Juventus wins 1-0.

Higuain made the difference in the first leg with his brace.

Cape Town - Juventus manager Massimiliano Allegri has warned against complacency as his side heads into their Champions League semi-final second leg with a 2-0 advantage over Monaco. Juventus are heading for their sixth successive Serie A title and produced an utterly clinical display in the first leg. The German midfielder is likely to be straight back into the starting lineup, with Claudio Marchisio expected to make way for him.

Juventus, though, began to take control and both Gonzalo Higuain and Mandzukic had golden opportunities to break the deadlock, with the latter denied expertly by goalkeeper Danijel Subasic. The Brazilian is unlikely to feature again this season.

The only injury doubt on either side concerns Monaco defender Benjamin Mendy, after holding midfielder Tiemoue Bakayoko was declared fit. Two goals from Higuain, his first two goals ever in the knock out stages of the Champions League.

"Monaco" in the current Champions League in seven away games won three, lost three and tied once. Home "Juventus" missed in six Champions League matches in a row.

The Monaco captain will have to be at the top of his game on Tuesday.

Tax cuts not a cure-all
The Trump administration hopes to generate economic growth of 3 percent - measured by annual rate of gross domestic product. But this exercise did reinforce my perceptions that the current proposals bear little resemblance to Reaganomics.

Because only once in the history of the European Cup has a team lost a first leg at home by a two-goal margin and then recovered to qualify.

In the Champions League rivals have met three times previously.

Prediction: Juventus wins 2-0.

Veteran Colombian striker Radamel Falcao will lead the Monaco strike line from the front. Play an aggressive game, play well technically and even better than we did in Monaco, where we were often wrong, with more patience. That goal may have robbed this performance of its perfection, but Juventus still did more than enough.

Monaco's path to the final will be historically hard.

Los Blancos had conceded in every one of their previous home games in the Champions League this season, while Atleti had let in only five goals in ten matches in the competition, statistics that ultimately counted for little in the first leg at the Bernabeu.

The last time they were beaten there was August 2015 - when Monaco wonderkid Kylian Mbappe was still turning out for the under 16 team.

Even with the comfortable advantage in front of their home fans, Juventus are bound to be make life hard for Monaco with the Italians looking destined to meet Real Madrid in Cardiff.
