A seven-judge bench of the Supreme Court has sentenced a sitting judge of a High Court to six months imprisonment.
As the police from Kolkata, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh coordinated on their mission to find the "missing" judge, there were unconfirmed reports that he had left the country and taken a flight "either to Bangladesh or Nepal or Singapore from Chennai".
A petition about the recall was mentioned before a five- judge bench headed by Chief Justice J S Khehar, which agreed to look into it. Justice Karnan in his application says that the SC has erred by convicting him.
On May 1, in response to the apex court ordering an examination of his "mental health", Justice Karnan asserted that he would issue a suo moto suspension order against West Bengal Director General of Police (DGP) if he forcefully conducted a medical checkup.
Karnan, who reached Chennai late on Tuesday evening, checked into the State guest house at Chepauk and even addressed reporters, who followed him from the airport.
Mr. Dwivedi read out from a letter that Justice Karnan had challenged the jurisdiction of the Bench to conduct the contempt proceedings against him.
Meanwhile, there are reports that the Tamil Nadu government has direct its police to go slow on the matter as Justice Karnan's arrest can create law and order issue at his native place in Tamil Nadu, India Today reported. The warrant had come nearly a month after the court had asked Justice Karnan to appear in person and explain why contempt proceedings not be initiated against him.

When Justice Chinnaswamy Swaminathan Karnan was sentenced by the Supreme Court on Tuesday, the now infamous Calcutta High Court judge came under the spotlight for all the wrong reasons.
A belligerent Justice Karnan had told the court he would not appear before it again even if he was arrested and put in jail.
The controversy began in January when Karnan wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to order an investigation against judges of the Madras high court and the apex court of corruption.
Peter, however, did reveal Justice Karnan's next steps.
This series of events eventually led to the Supreme Court transferring Karnan from the Madras High Court to the Calcutta High Court in March 2016.
He tagged the apex court judges as "accused" for not being present.
