Authorities say nine people were hurt and two arrests were made during an altercation at the Turkish ambassador's residence in the US capital.

Men and women were on the ground trying to shield themselves as men primarily in suits, alleged by some to be Erdogan's bodyguards, beat and kicked the protesters.

Erdogan was in the USA capital on Tuesday for apparently successful talks with President Donald Trump but his visit was marred by violence between his security detail and pro-Kurdish protesters.

The government of Turkey today presented as an achievement the results of a meeting between Presidents Donald Trump and Recep Tayyip Erdogan, although none of Ankara " s main demands were met.

McCain and Sen. Dianne Feinstein of California, the senior Democrat on the Judiciary Committee, told Erdogan in a letter they sent Thursday that the "actions of your staff violate the constitutional protections of freedom of the press and freedom of assembly enjoyed by all Americans".

"What we saw yesterday - a violent attack on a peaceful demonstration - is an affront to D.C. values and our rights as Americans", Mayor Muriel Bowser said in a statement.

The clash came after Erdogan stood side by side with Trump at the White House. The guards surround a middle-aged man who had been kicked to the ground and continuously kick him in the face.

Washington [U.S.], May 17: Nine protesters were injured outside the residence of the Turkish Ambassador here on Tuesday. Two people were arrested.

A separate group waving Turkish flags arrived and started chanting slogans in support of Erdogan, the VOA reported. The US President had promised to strengthen strained ties despite Erdogan's objections to the US arming of Kurdish fighters.

The biggest dispute between Turkey and the USA recently has been the Trump administration's plans to arm Kurdish Syrian militants fighting the Islamic State group. Turkey insists that these YPG militants and their PYD political party are tied to the Kurdish insurgency in Turkey known as the PKK, which the US, the European Union and Turkey all consider a terrorist organization. While Erdogan called for the extradition of a Pennsylvania-based cleric he blames for a failed coup in Turkey last summer, there was little tension.
