LeGarrette Blount joins the Eagles on 1-year contract

The Eagles signed former New England Patriots running back LeGarrette Blount Wednesday, which could have a dramatic impact both on the team's backfield and the balance of Doug Pederson's offense.

According to NFL.com's Ian Rapoport, Blount will get a deal worth up to $2.8 million.

Yet it didn't take much longer for Blount to find work for the 2017 season.

Blount rushed for an NFL-high 18 touchdowns previous year with the New England Patriots.

The American also won a Super Bowl with the Patriots in 2015. Given his 250-pound frame, Blount now gives Pederson and offensive coordinator Frank Reich a legitimate option to run the ball in short-yardage situations and along the goal line.

"I chose Philly because I thought it was the best fit for me", he said.

The desire for Blount in Detroit was understandable, but the attraction was mostly superficial based on counting stats Blount achieved last season because he racked up so many carries.

Coach Bruce Arians spoke earlier this offseason about giving running back David Johnson 30 touches a game, and Johnson said he was ready for such a workload. Before a year ago, Blount went five-straight seasons under 1,000 rushing yards. Undrafted free agent Corey Clement also joined Pumphrey in the mix of veteran and youth tailbacks.

We have to wait and see the contract structure for Blount because it is likely to be heavily incentive-driven.

Blount has rushed for 5,122 yards with 49 touchdowns over 100 career games (eight seasons) with the Patriots, Pittsburgh Steelers and Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

And although general manager Jerry Reese admitted after the draft that the team would "keep all options open" when it came to adding Blount to the roster, it seems like that was all smoke and mirrors.

What this reveals is the Cardinals are actively seeking depth at running back and would like to add an experienced player before the season starts.
