Melissa McCarthy, Alec Baldwin reprise spoofs of President Trump, Sean Spicer

Lamar Ellis | 15 May, 2017, 03:12

Unfortunately, she found him in the form of Alec Baldwin, and before long, the two were making out.

This week's edition was the penultimate episode in SNL's 42nd season.

Deputy press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders (who described herself as the daughter of Mike Huckabee "and a big Southern hamburger") did her best to cover for her absent boss, assuring reporters that he was not, in fact, lurking in the bushes. A reporter asks Bryant's Sanders, "Can you just do this full-time instead of him?" referring to McCarthy's Spicer, who is seen hiding in bushes outside the briefing room. The only Russian "thing", she said, is her "little dollies", pulling out wooden Matryoshka dolls (which house dolls of smaller sizes inside) emblazoned with Trump's face.

"That's right. Spicey's back".

But here's the troubling news.

"Wait so, did I get him?"

But Trump's White House has been taking a beating as it fails to coordinate and get out a coherent message.

"Spicey" then addressed a follow-up question about the firing of FBI Director James Comey and the status of the Russian Federation investigation.

The opening sketch lobbed several zingers at Trump, including a risque reference to Trump's claim to have coined the phrase "priming the pump".

Swansea closes in on EPL survival with 2-0 win at Sunderland
He said: "Obviously there's a lot of pressure on both of those teams now, not just Hull , but also Crystal Palace as well".

I have a feeling that after a somewhat tumultuous week in government politics - is there any other kind of week these days? - the skit will not see Spicer treading gently.

Could this really be the end for Spicey?!

"I am being honest with you", McCarthy's Spicer answers.

In fairness, McCarthy's depiction of Spicey as an over-the-top, buffoonish character has made me acutely aware of the concern some of my fellow progressives have about comedians' take on Trump.

Trump asserted that his communications department couldn't keep up with him because he was "moving so quickly". "If he's insane, he's insane like a fox with mental problems", McCarthy replied. So it was time for SNL's Spicer to have some sort of personal reckoning. Interviewed by NBC News' Lester Holt (actually cast member Michael Che), Trump was asked if he could assure the nation he wouldn't name someone "crazy" to replace ousted FBI Director James Comey. But Melissa's impersonation of Spicer has to be the most delicious surprise of this season", James Andrew Miller, author of "Live From New York: "The Complete, Uncensored History of Saturday Night Live", told CNN.

The cold open was also SNL's raunchiest lampooning of Trump to date, with a number of penis jokes aimed at the president.

The White House press secretary was dogged earlier in the week by questions about former national security adviser Michael Flynn, then was forced to hide in or behind the bushes as reporters sought answers about the firing of Federal Bureau of Investigation director James Comey.

As for Alec Baldwin's Trump, his pained facial expressions were put through the wringer. Spicer asks before Trump embraces him. Another questioned Spicer's trust in Trump. McCarthy's Spicer asked Baldwin's Trump, who replied, "Only since you started working here".
