Collomb, a 69-year-old Socialist, has been a long-time mayor of Lyon.

Among names being bandied around for the top job in Macron's first government, speculation mostly centered on Edouard Philippe.

When Britain leaves the bloc in 2019, France will be the EU's only member with nuclear weapons and a permanent seat on the U.N. Security Council.

Le Drian was seen as the driving force behind France's counter-terrorism operations in West Africa and the Middle East, and a key player in efforts to fight the threat from Islamist militants at home by putting some 10,000 soldiers on the streets of France. The remaining seven ministers are not attached to any political movement.

Germany's Sigmar Gabriel said in a statement it's important "that we move Europe forward together, that we take the initiative and get the German-French engine running at full speed".

Newly elected French President Emmanuel Macron named his cabinet on Wednesday, appointing veteran Socialist Jean-Yves Le Drian to foreign affairs and a rightwinger as economy minister in a team that cuts across traditional party lines. Hulot has been touted as a minister in every government over recent years so it is somewhat of a coup for Macron to persuade him to join his cabinet.

Macron, who became the youngest President in the French history, appointed Edouard Philippe, center-right politician of the Republicans, as his Prime Minister.

On Tuesday, he and Philippe were finalising a government which Macron says will supersede France's entrenched left-right divide and breathe new life into the country's jaded political landscape.

Bruno Le Maire (Le-mare) is a member of The Republicans party. The president's office said Mr Macron wanted to allow time for thorough checks on the ministers' background, including their tax situation, and avoid conflicts of interest.

Still, Macron's appointment of Philippe is a clear attempt to reach out to the to conservatives to build support going in to France's parliamentary elections in June.

"Macron has tried to strike a fine political balance to maximize his chances of building a majority, while making sure the new government has enough competent figures to launch reforms", Antonio Barroso, deputy director of research at Teneo Intelligence, said in a note.

French President Emmanuel Macron appointed his first Cabinet on Wednesday mixing Socialists, centrists and right-wingers with newcomers to politics as he pressed ahead with plans to create a broad governing coalition.

Le Maire is a free-marketeer and a heavyweight in the LR party, which he has urged to cooperate with the 39-year-old president while others refuse such an alliance. Mr Macron has said he wants a team of maximum 15 ministers, fewer than in the outgoing Socialist administration.
