Protesting Students Walk Out On Pence's Address At Notre Dame

Trump willing to engage NK but stresses 'right conditions': envoy Protesting Students Walk Out On Pence's Address At Notre Dame
Lamar Ellis | 22 May, 2017, 02:38

The previously organized walkout came courtesy of student coalition We StaND For, which cited Pence's record as both IN governor and Vice President on LGBT rights, Syrian refugee resettlement, sanctuary cities and the travel ban on majority-Muslim nations. Students say they are expressing solidarity with LGBTQ, undocumented, low-income, and female students affected by Pence's policies.

Pence in his speech blasted the "noxious wave" of P.C. culture sweeping college campuses outside of Notre Dame - deriding the "speech codes, safe zones, tone policing (and) administration-sanctioned political correctness" that he said stifle free speech.

"I think that with the protests coming out, there has been this sort of perception that Notre Dame doesn't want Vice President Pence here speaking at Commencement", he said.

The protesters say the demonstration is more about Pence's policies during his tenure as IN governor than being Donald Trump's veep - policies that allegedly "targeted" the LGBT community, immigrants, and refugees. "We have plans in place for such weather emergencies, but we hate to disappoint so many people", Browne said. In 2009, many anti-abortion activists (largely outside the university) condemned Notre Dame for inviting President Obama to deliver the address, given his support for abortion rights.

As governor, Pence tried to block state agencies from helping Syrian refugees resettle in Indiana.

"Alumni and students flooded administrators' inboxes with emails protesting the decision, and faculty members have called for boycotts".

40,000 people are expected to be at this year's Notre Dame Commencement.

Vice President Mike Pence is in Grove City today, getting ready for his commencement speech at Grove City College. South Bend Equality will protest near campus, at Angela Blvd. and Notre Dame Ave.

Bryan Ricketts, who served as Notre Dame's student body president from 2015-16 and graduated Sunday with a dual-degree in political science and chemical engineering, was one of the leaders.

Pence says the nation will not rest until it defeats the Islamic State. He is scheduled to speak at the University of Notre Dame where a protest against him is also planned on May 21, and at the U.S. Naval Academy on May 26.

"I would encourage them to keep an open mind", he said "Obviously having a constructive dialogue is an important thing, and I think that if you don't attend Commencement, it'll be hard to keep that dialogue open".

Before Pence, recent commencement speakers included prominent Republicans such as former presidential candidates Dr.
