British Prime Minister Theresa May has urged people in the United Kingdom to remain vigilant - even though the country's terror threat level has now been reduced.

Two men aged 20 and 22 were held on suspicion of terror offences after officers used an explosive device to gain entry to the property, Greater Manchester Police (GMP) said.

The level had been raised to "critical" after Monday's deadly bombing that targeted crowds at the Ariana Grande show on May 22 killing 22 people mostly children and teenagers.

Another 116 were injured in the blast which was claimed by the extremist Islamic State group. Two people were arrested and later released.

The decision was made following a series of arrests linked to the Manchester Arena bombing.

"Everyone's just anxious, no matter where they are, it's scary stuff", Moss Side resident David Bailey, 29, told AFP after Saturday's police raids on a neighbourhood notorious for gangland violence. However, the threat level remains severe and there will still be significant numbers of armed police on our streets.

It's been downgraded on the advice of security services from "critical" to "severe", meaning an attack is still highly likely. I would ask people to remain vigilant and to co-operate fully with police and security staff as they carry out the necessary extra checks at events over the Bank Holiday weekend.

Prime Minister Theresa May said, via The Guardian: "A significant amount of police activity has taken place of the last 24 hours and there are now 11 suspects in custody".

Greater Manchester Police said the change in threat level would not affect its investigation. We will all continue to support them in whatever way we can as the investigation continues.

The country is taking the unusual step of arming police for patrols in Manchester, London and other locations this weekend during spring bank holiday, the country's first holiday since the bombing.

The attack was described by May as "the worst attack the city has experienced".

Manchester-born Salman Abedi launched the attack on young fans attending a concert by USA pop star Ariana Grande in the latest atrocity claimed by the Islamic State group in Europe.

Between 2009-2016, the number of police officers fell by nearly 20,000, or around 14 percent, the independent Institute for Fiscal Studies think tank said.
