Schwarber, Rizzo HR, Cubs top Reds 9-5; Maddon's 1000th win

Debra Rodriguez | 18 May, 2017, 09:25

Kyle Hendricks gets the ball for Chicago. Manager Joe Maddon said he might need a rehab assignment before returning to the roster. "It's a hard place to pitch when the wind's blowing the way it is, and their guys just did a better job of keeping the ball in the park than we did".

"It was a bad night to pitch", Chicago Cubs starter John Lackey said.

The Chicago Cubs improved to 18-5 vs. the Cincinnati Reds since the beginning of last season with a 9-5 triumph last night.

Kyle Schwarber went 2-for-5, including a 462-foot home run, to pace a 13-hit attack as Chicago (19-19) snapped a two-game losing streak. I talked to him afterwards and he was really excited.

Cozart put Cincinnati in front with an RBI single in the first, but Chicago went ahead to stay with five runs in the second against Scott Feldman (2-4).

Ian Happ hit his second homer in his third major league game and Addison Russell also went deep as Chicago returned to.500 after a lackluster road trip. "We know how good we can and will be when we get it locked in".

The Reds will promote left-hander Amir Garrett from Triple-A Louisville to start Thursday's series finale against the Cubs.

Cozart went 3-for-5 with two RBIs, while Duvall was 2-for-4 with one run batted in. Offensively, Zack Cozart leads the Reds with 42 hits and 17 RBI while Billy Hamilton and Joey Votto have combined for 82 hits and 48 RBI.

Hendricks is the first starter to right himself and hit the kind of commanding stride the team has desperately needed. Jon Jay was hit by a pitch to load the bases, and Schwarber punched a grounder down the right field line to bring home Russell and Miguel Montero for a 3-1 lead.

"That was not a way to end the ballgame unless they can show us something definitively", Price said.

Chicago had runners on second and third with one out in the third and Hendricks made it 6-2 when he brought home Zobrist with a successful sacrifice bunt.

But using a fastball that rarely reached 87 miles per hour, a changeup 7 or 8 miles per hour slower and a healthy fear of the middle of the strike zone, last year's major-league ERA leader (2.13) turned in a second consecutive quality start in adverse conditions (also last week at Coors Field).

"That game was one of my better ones, for sure, too, just because I got stronger in those later innings", he said. The lights for the first couple of letters were out for the whole game. Chicago RHP Wade Davis has not allowed a home run in relief in his last 64 1/3 innings since September 24, 2015, the second-longest major league streak behind Baltimore LHP Zach Britton's 72-inning stretch.
