South Sudanese refugees need $1.4b this year

By March 2017, over 1.7 million South Sudanese refugees had fled to the six countries represented by the Regional Refugee Response Plan (RRP): the Central African Republic, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia, Kenya, Sudan, and Uganda.

Kenya counts about 97,000 South Sudanese refugees, DR Congo has 76,000 and the Central African Republic 2,200.

WFP Executive Director David Beasley, a long-time member of the US Republican Party and former governor of SC, called the suffering "just unimaginable."They are close to the abyss". Aid workers often cannot reach the most vulnerable hungry people.

The agencies increased their 2017 appeal for South Sudan's refugees, saying they needed at least $1.4 billion to help alleviate "unimaginable" levels of suffering. But the plan so far remains only 14 per cent funded.

The current rate of people fleeing South Sudan exceeds the humanitarian community's already pessimistic estimates.

The UN has appealed for more funding to help almost two million people who have fled South Sudan.

Neighboring Uganda has had to contend with the largest number of refugees - there are now almost 900,000 South Sudanese refugees there.

"Our funding situation forced us to cut food rations for many refugees in Uganda", Beasley said, a situation he called "unacceptable".

With acute underfunding, humanitarian agencies are struggling to provide food, water, nutrition support, shelter and health services to refugees.

Beasley, who was appointed WFP chief in March, said that shortages of cash had forced the United Nations body to decrease its aid to famine-stricken refugees, who have escaped poverty and war in South Sudan.

The UNHCR welcomed the outstanding generosity refugees have received in South Sudan's neighbouring countries, but is alarmed by a situation which is now critical.

Ethiopia is hosting the same number, while the situation in Uganda is even more dire, with almost 900,000 refugees from South Sudan in that country.

UNHCR coordinates the overall response with governments, humanitarian agencies as well as with refugees and host communities.

JUBA South Sudan (Xinhua) - A senior South Sudanese rebel official on Monday said the region-backed peace efforts in the war-torn country will not yield fruits unless leaders stopped viewing the exiled former first vice president Riek Machar as a peace spoiler. A 2015 peace deal failed when new clashes in the capital last July killed almost 300 people.

He urged donors not to get distracted with other issues and to do more to help those from South Sudan in need.

A United Nations source said that with more than 1.8 million refugees, one million of them are children, having sought safety in the neighboring countries, South Sudan has now become the world's fastest growing refugee crisis.

South Sudan, the world's youngest nation which split from the north in 2011, has declared famine in some areas, warning that one million people are on the brink of starvation. Since it was made, the situation in South Sudan has continued to deteriorate.
