Still struggling with back injury, Rory McIlroy will undergo MRI on Monday

Vera Richards | 14 May, 2017, 01:59

He admits he can not hit many balls on the range and only managed nine practice holes before he played at the Masters last month.

McIlroy, who was diagnosed with a fractured rib in January and didn't play again until March at the WGC-Mexico Championship, said the injury is not as painful this time; he is even-par through 36 holes at The Players Championship after birdieing his final hole for 71.

The 28-year-old is set to have an MRI scan in Northern Ireland on Monday and another break may see him miss the BMW PGA Championship later this month.

"Yeah, I've been struggling with it a bit this week, sort of felt it for the first time on Sunday", McIlroy said.

"It wasn't ideal golf, but I managed it really well and made a few nice saves when I needed to and made a few nice putts".

But he is hopeful the injury is not serious, saying: "I'm getting a MRI on Monday when I land back in Belfast, just treatment now".

"It's in the same area as what the injury was at the start of the year". So it's, it might just be a flare-up of what happened previously and I just need to rest for a few days and it might be OK. Hopefully, all going well, we get back on.

Daniel Cormier - Jon Jones II is Officially Booked
Cormier was supposed to defend his belt against Johnson at last December's UFC 210 but pulled out with another injury. As it was, Jones was unable to confirm Friday that his fight with Cormier would be the main event at UFC 214 .

"It's just about making sure that there's no, that this left rhomboid doesn't go into spasm and doesn't really tighten up around the joint".

McIlroy has gone through this enough that while he's not a doctor, he still has a pretty good idea that this soreness is more about the muscles than the joint.

Speaking about a round containing two birdies and one bogey, the newly-married four-time major victor said: "Today it seemed like the golf course should be gettable but no-one really posted any low numbers".

McIlroy feels his latest problem could have been caused by too much practising late last week following three weeks away from golf for his wedding and honeymoon.

"Two good yardages, two good shots and two good putts", he said after becoming the sixth player to record two eagles on the back nine in the same round at The Players. And I took three weeks off and then I went back at it begin on Friday and instead of maybe gradually building it up again. I've already limited the schedule down a lot, obviously all of the travelling we've been doing, and everything that's been going on. "I felt a bit of stiffness on Sunday, hit a couple of drives that didn't feel quite right", he said.

"So just working on that, as I said, but the warm weather helps, it helps it stay a little looser". "As long as I get myself right for the US Open, that's the most important thing".
