Trump warns Comey not to leak conversations

Christy Curtis | 14 May, 2017, 01:18

Burr said because there has been no evidence of collusion between President Donald Trump and Russian Federation it is unlikely FBI Director James Comey was sacked to impede the ongoing investigation, media reported. "I knew I wasn't under investigation".

The White House also changed its narrative about whether the president had chose to fire Mr Comey based on the recommendations by Mr Rosenstein and Attorney General Jeff Sessions.

The president's advisers said this week that Mr Trump fired Mr Comey on Tuesday in response to a recommendation by Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein. But the acting director's contradiction of the White House version of events raises even more questions about the real reasons that Trump fired Comey.

"I was going to fire regardless of recommendation", Trump said.

Later, the president and his advisers said Mr Trump had planned to fire Mr Comey since taking office.

"I actually asked him, yes", Trump said.

The New York Times report said that Comey has told associates he declined to make a pledge of loyalty to Trump when the president requested it as the pair had dinner at the White House just seven days after his inauguration. "He wanted somebody that could bring credibility back to the Federal Bureau of Investigation that had been lost over this last several months", White House Principal Deputy Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said.

White House connects Comey firing, 'conclusion' of Russian Federation probe
Widespread reports in the USA media suggested that Comey was asking for more resources for that investigation. He would not comment on conversations between Trump and the former Federal Bureau of Investigation director.

"I know I'm not under investigation", Trump told Holt in an advance clip released from the 30-minute long interview which will air Thursday night on NBC Nightly News. Trump said in one of a string of Twitter messages. Comey had lost the support of his agents, she said.

"For many people, including myself, it is hard to avoid the conclusion that the president's decision to remove Director Comey was related to this investigation".

But Mr Trump's dismissal of the very man in charge of investigating whether his campaign colluded with Russian Federation has attracted allegations of a cover-up.

Comey has never said himself that he told Trump he wasn't under investigation.

He said there had been no attempt to impede the investigation and that he believed it would be unaffected by Mr Comey's departure. "You didn't take it as disloyalty?" asked Holt, specifically about Comey denying that Trump was ever wiretapped.

In the wide-ranging interview, Trump also insisted there was no "collusion between me and my campaign and the Russians".
