US admiral: North Korea's actions 'recipe for disaster'

Earlier today, newly elected South Korean President Moon Jae-in said there was a "high possibility" of conflict with North Korea.

South Korea wants to reopen communications with North Korea, officials said yesterday.

The top USA commander in the Pacific, meanwhile, warned that North Korea's nuclear weapons program is "a recipe for disaster", three days after the communist state test-fired what some said was its most successful missile.

"North Korea launched a missile four days ago and claims to have succeeded in launching an intermediate-range ballistic missile", said Moon, speaking at the South Korean Defense Ministry.

"I do not think that it is the proper timing to go to the six-party talks so I may repeat what I have already said, we have to exert proper pressure by the global community to North Korea to create a situation in order to entice North Korea to change their position and come up with a very honest attitude towards the current situation", he said.

In February past year, however, North Korea expelled the last remaining South Koreans from the Kaesong joint industrial park inside North Korea, following the South's closure of the complex, due to fresh United Nations sanctions in the wake of North Korea's last nuclear test.

President Trump says he's willing to make peace through dialogue with North Korea if conditions are right.

The U.N. Security Council first imposed sanctions on North Korea in 2006 and has strengthened the measures in response to its five nuclear tests and two long-range rocket launches.

Ex-FBI chief Comey to testify in US Congress
The week in a seemingly endless onslaught of news about chaos coming from within the White House shows no signs of slowing down. That investigation includes examining whether there was any collusion between the campaigns and the Russian government.

Even though during his presidential campaign Moon Jae-in advocated a more moderate approach towards North Korea, he has also said that Pyongyang must slow down its weapon development before South Korea could pursue any meaningful dialogue with it.

The President also recently described Kim Jong Un as a "smart cookie", and recently stated that he would be "honored" to meet him under the right circumstances.

According to the North's Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), the test was aimed at determining the missile's capability of carrying a "large-scale heavy nuclear warhead", though this has not been confirmed.

The threat to expand sanctions is the latest response from the US following a North Korean ballistic missile test this past weekend.

The U.S. ambassador said Russian Federation has the same decision to make as the rest of the worldwide community: "You either support North Korea or you don't, but you have to choose".

US President Donald Trump has called for "far stronger sanctions" on North Korea and warned last month that a "major, major conflict" with Pyongyang was possible.

"There have been very significant sanctions and pressure on North Korea and now there is atmosphere for dialogue between North Korea and the United States".

Reuters notes that the test was detected by the up-and-running components of the THAAD missile shield, which North Korea and its patron China strongly oppose, in part because its sensory systems are so powerful.
