Wikileaks leaker to be released from military prison

Christy Curtis | 17 May, 2017, 08:41

Trump, in his first days in office, blasted Obama's decision to release Manning from prison early, and Manning for criticizing the former president. "I can imagine surviving and living as the person who I am and can finally be in the outside world".

'Freedom used to be something that I dreamed of but never allowed myself to fully imagine'.

Last year, we learned that Manning had attempted suicide in her cell in July, and subsequently was punished by a military disciplinary board and sentenced to two weeks in solitary confinement.

Manning has indicated that she intends to live in Maryland after her release, a move that will bring her story full circle.

However, a spokesperson for the Army, Dave Foster, confirmed that she would remain active despite as her court-martial conviction is still under appeal.

Lovecruft said: "Chelsea's code was well-written, and I was excited that she was not only persevering but studying post-quantum cryptography. But mostly I felt angry, and frankly a bit nauseous, at the injustices involved in requiring someone as brilliant as her to dictate code over the phone". However, she underwent hormone treatment while incarcerated.

Although Manning initially entered prison as a man named Bradley, he later transitioned to a woman and adopted the name Chelsea in 2013.

Manning was arrested in 2010 and came out as transgender after being sentenced.

Ahead of her daughter's release from military jail, Manning's Welsh mother, Susan Manning, said: 'I am so proud of Chelsea and delighted she will finally be free again. Having announced immediately after receiving her swingeing sentence an intention to transition to a female identity, Manning has had to fight a long and arduous battle for recognition of her right to do this.

The footage shows Lady Gaga filming Assange at the Ecuadorian embassy in London as she questions him about Manning's detention.

Manning, now 29, made two suicide attempts a year ago alone, along with a hunger strike to denounce the disciplinary measures to which she was subjected.

Her medical treatment was not the only area over which Manning was feeling "joy" toward recovering her autonomy. Upon release, the idea of being able to "express her gender in her own terms" through her appearance has created an "incredibly powerful anticipation", Strangio said. She was not allowed to grow out her hair while in prison, though the military said she could proceed with gender reassignment surgery upon her release.

Her lawyer, Chase Strangio, added in the ACLU statement that Manning had been abused at Leavenworth but did not specify the type of abuse. He too emphasized the need to give Manning ample space during this hard period, but also encouraged her to use her position to pursue activism and continue to speak truth to power.
