Apple Unveils Powerful New iMac Pro

Apple Unveils Powerful New iMac Pro Apple Unveils Powerful New iMac Pro

Graphics on iMac are much more powerful across the line with the new Radeon Pro 500-series graphics with up to 8GB of vRAM.

IMac - The workhorse of Apple's desktop line has always been the iMac, which Apple continues to offer in three basic models: a 21.5 inch non-Retina version, a 21.5-inch iMac with 4K Retina display, and the 27-inch iMac with Retina 5K display. Of course there's more to the new Pro than its speed, so we've got all the details below in a form that won't make your head explode. The MacBook Pro which Apple released late previous year with the Touch Bar now comes with 7th-gen Intel Kaby Lake processors along with support for more memory. But the entry-level model is an enticing option for current MacBook Air owners who are considering an upgrade. But if you aren't interested in high-end photo editing, there are also some cool tools for editing your Live Photos: you can now turn them into animated loops. The Touch Bar is nice, but not essential or revolutionary, and there's also a model that comes without it. The 21.5-inch iMac is now available in standard HD (1920x1080 pixels) LED-backlit display and a Retina 4K (4096x2304 pixels) display. However, they can be configured with up to 18-core CPUs and Vega 64 GPUs with twice as much HBM2 memory capacity.

Read our thoughts on the Apple iMac 21.5-inch and Apple iMac 27-inch models.

The most affordable 21.7-inch 4K iMac starts at $1,399 CAD and is available to order right now on Apple's Canadian website.

Visually, you can barely tell the difference.

In that meeting, Apple also pledged to rework the display-less Mac Pro in 2018, and to ship new iMacs this year.

The updated 13-inch MacBook Pro features Kaby Lake processors up to 3.5GHz Core i7 with Turbo Boost up to 4.0GHz, and the 15-inch MacBook Pro goes up to 3.1GHz Core i7 with Turbo Boost up to 4.1GHz.

You can now buy a MacBook with 16 GB of RAM, up from the previous limit of 8 GB, and Apple claims that the MacBook's onboard SSD is up to 50 percent faster. The improved keyboard and the faster CPU options feel like a real step forward, although the system is still not quite as updated as we'd like. Having the extra port is vitally important when you're using an external device like a USB-C SSD and the charger simultaneously. The company also kept its promise for an iMac Pro, unveiling the most powerful Mac ever released - stuffed inside a space gray iMac enclosure. The word "Pro" features heavily, so consumers looking for a "value" product may find little of relevance among the latest additions to the Apple stable.

The box and the iMac design haven't changed for the past few years.

iMac Pro is built on Intel's next-generation 18-core Xeon, a powerful processor designed for heavy workflows. The new Radeon Pro Vega can deliver up to 11 teraflops of single-precision compute power for real-time 3D rendering and high frame rate virtual reality.

The iMac Pro wasn't the only computer announced during the show. The iMac has Turbo Boost up to 3.6GHz supported, and 1 TB hard drive.

The iMac Pro features a 5K display and, thanks to the added muscle under the hood, can support two additional 5K displays, something Apple says it has never offered before. Apple's stunning Retina display screen remains on both models. For the first time ever on a Mac, iMac Pro features 10Gb Ethernet for up to 10 times faster networking.
