Mr Bate's devastated parents and sister are flying to the US.

Authorities said 33-year-old Matthew Bate got into an argument with two men that turned physical about 2am on Friday outside the Da Vinci Villa hotel in the Russian Hill neighbourhood.

He was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Fox 2 News reported that investigators are reviewing CCTV footage from a nearby security camera.

San Francisco Police Department officer Giselle Talcoff told media that Bate was involved in a verbal altercation that escalated to physical violence.

NBC is reporting the fight happened near a hotel.

Officer Talkoff declined to provide further details.

Mr Bate is understood to have moved to Darwin to work as an analytical chemist with SGS Australia, a testing, inspection, verification and certification company.

Andrew Borden, of Wisconsin, was also a guest at the hotel early Friday. According to Talkoff said homicide detectives are questioning the detained individuals to determine their involvement, if any, in the brawl.

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade said it was providing consular assistance to Mr Bate's family, and asked that their privacy be respected "at this most hard time".
