Bay Area braces for multi-day heat wave

Phoenix Las Vegas and Death Valley in California are expected to break previous all-time high records this June even before summer officially starts Bay Area braces for multi-day heat wave

Mid-90s daytime high temperatures were expected on Monday, before seeing the mercury ramp back to, or above, the 100-degree mark beginning on Tuesday.

The National Weather Services issued a heat advisory Thursday for Northern California areas that include the southern Sacramento Valley and the San Joaquin-Sacramento River Delta.

The heat will be on "high" in the Desert Southwest the next several days.

Friday's high is forecast around 98 degrees, with a north wind up to 13 miles per hour.

The National Weather Service is warning of a heat wave in the days ahead with temperatures peaking on Saturday.

Residents are encouraged to take precautions these coming days, especially by people who participate in outdoor activities, older adults, caretakers of infants and children and those sensitive to heat, county officials said in a news release.

Along with the high temperatures, high humidity will contribute to heat index values as high as 112 degrees, the weather service reports.

Temperatures overnight won't cool much either, staying in the mid 70s. Employers need to ensure workers are drinking plenty of water and taking breaks in the shade as temperatures rise, the state agency says.

The hot conditions are labeled as a classic pre-monsoon heat event for the Southwest region, NWS said. An even higher temperature - 108 - is expected by Tuesday, but then temperatures start dropping. The combination of hot temperatures and high humidity will combine to create a unsafe situation in which heat illness is likely.Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors.Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. "Extreme heat such as this is not just an inconvenience, it can be risky and even deadly, but we can protect ourselves, our families, and our neighbors if we take steps to remain cool and hydrated".
