ALEXANDRIA, VIRGINIA -A gunman who has been identified as James T. Hodgkinson, 66, of IL, opened fire on Republican legislators Wednesday morning as they were holding a baseball practice in Alexandria, Virginia, according to FOX News.

The suspected shooter who opened fire on Republican lawmakers practicing for the Congressional Baseball Game had been in Alexandria, Va. since March and is believed to have been living in a white cargo van, the Federal Bureau of Investigation said Wednesday evening.

The alleged gunman who shot and wounded several people Wednesday morning at a GOP congressional baseball practice near Washington D.C. has ties to the Quad Cities. Let me be as clear as I can be.

"Real change can only come about through nonviolent action and anything else runs against our most deeply held American values", the Vermont senator continued in his statement. As we continue to gather information, Tracy and I would like to send our prayers to my friend and colleague, Steve Scalise, as well as members of the security detail and congressional staff who were injured.

Alexandria Police Chief Michael Brown said the suspect, who was shot by two of his officers, is in custody.

Alexandria police officers and Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms agents have swept Hodgkinson's vehicle, Slater said.

Hodgkinson, 66, was killed in a shootout with police after firing on the practice, authorities said.

Scalise, a Republican from Louisiana, had surgery and is in stable condition at MedStar Washington Hospital Center, his office said. But Hodgkinson's strong anti-Republican stances and background as a former volunteer on Bernie Sanders campaign only added to suggestions that the shooting was politically motivated. Scalise is also a key Trump ally and is known for his conservative political outlook.

Hodgkinson had a history of violence, news.com.au notes. A total of five people were wounded.

The Daily Beast is reporting that Hodgkinson called Republicans "racist & sexist" on his Facebook page."Trump is a Traitor", Hodgkinson wrote in a May 22 Facebook post. "He was always happy-go-lucky", said Dale Walsh, who grew up with Hodgkinson in Belleville. President Donald Trump later said Hodgkinson was dead.
