The Government have confirmed that Brexit Secretary David Davis will be in Brussels at the start of the week for meetings with the EU's chief negotiator Michel Barnier.

There was speculation that chaos in Britain, caused by last week's shock general election outcome, would lead to Brexit negotiations being delayed.

The Conservatives are still negotiating with the Democratic Unionist Party over whether their 10 MPs will support the Tories' minority government.

The Queen's Speech, a formal ceremony during which the queen reads out the government's plans for the new legislation term, will be held Wednesday.

"But it's also really important we make sure the Brexit deal we secure is one that's in the interests of the whole country and that means that we need to ensure that those who voted Remain are part of the conversation about what the best deal for Britain is in the future".

The outcome of the election might force her to seek a cross-party political consensus to agree on how the United Kingdom will leave the European Union.

"If the government cannot even secure a deal with the DUP, how on earth can they get a deal with the European Union?" asked MP Alistair Carmichael. It does not wash.

But given May will have a limited majority in the House of Commons, even with the backing of the Northern Irish party, opposition parties such as Labour and the Liberal Democrats have their own agendas to pursue and will seek to amend any law that comes before Parliament connected to Britain's withdrawal from Europe. "It is the only way to unite the country and strengthen our bargaining power with the European Union".

Mr Hammond will say: "Investors need certainty in order to continue to support the United Kingdom economy and create jobs as we leave the EU".

The talks are taking place three months after Prime Minister Theresa May formally triggered the two-year Brexit timetable.

The British public had opted to leave the European Union in a referendum a year ago, ending the country's 44-year-long membership with the bloc.

The Government are hoping to negotiate a trade deal with the European Union within the two-year Article 50 process, but the bloc has warned "significant progress" must be made on divorce talks before a future trade relationship with the United Kingdom can be discussed.

The first day of formal Brexit negotiations follows "talks about talks" between Commission officials and British civil servants this week.

On Monday, the European Commission insisted it was "fully prepared and ready for the negotiations to start" the process.

"We are clear this is what is set out in Article 50".
