Britain's best-selling Sun newspaper said senior members of her party had vowed to get rid of May but would wait at least six months because they were anxious that a leadership contest now could propel Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn into power.

Labour wants to challenge the Prime Minister's authority after she was embarrassed by failing to secure a House of Commons majority in Thursday's general election.

But in one of the most sensational nights in British electoral history, a resurgent Labour Party denied her an outright win, throwing the country into political turmoil.

"And then it is up to other parties if they want to support us".

With all 650 seats declared, the Conservatives had won 318 seats, the Labour Party had 262 seats, followed by the pro-independence Scottish National Party on 34.

Still, rather than resign, May clung to the hope that her Conservatives might still be able to govern by making deals with another party or group of parties.

"She's staying, for now", the source told Reuters.

After noon, May was driven from her official Downing Street residence to Buckingham Palace to ask Queen Elizabeth for permission to form a government - a formality under the British system. Speaking Friday on Europe 1 radio, French Prime Minister Edouard Philippe said he doesn't believe British voters have changed their minds about leaving the bloc. Further announcements were expected today.

The rattled PM said she will form a minority with support from Northern Ireland's Democratic Unionist Party despite calls to stand down. "We will defend the interests of the 27 member states, and Britain will defend its own interests".

Philip Hammond, 61, a former foreign minister, is seen as a steady if unspectacular pair of hands guiding the economy through the turbulent waters of Brexit.

Jeremy Corbyn was pictured joining a children's football training session in Islington as one of his MPs said Labour missed an "open goal" to beat Theresa May and the Tories in the General Election.

"Do your best to avoid a "no deal" as result of "no negotiations".

"We were waiting for the election in Britain, but in the next few days these talks will begin".

But EU budget commissioner Guenther Oettinger said May was now likely to be a "weak" partner. A "soft" Brexit would remove Britain as a member of the European Union, but permit it to remain in the single market. "Whoever it is, they are going to have to make deals with other political parties, and nearly every other political party that has an MP in the new parliament wants a softer version of Brexit", says French. Other Conservatives have emphasized the importance of migration controls, something the European Union says is incompatible with open trade.

"That would prevent another election, because I think people have had enough of elections".

This loss is particularly embarrassing for May because she called for the elections three years sooner than required.

Nevertheless, May's miscalculation has benefited her rival, Corbyn, the most.

Some youths may also have taken revenge on their parents and grandparents for supporting Brexit - support for leaving the European Union was much higher among older generations in the referendum a year ago on whether Britain should leave the EU.

He gained ground when she outlined a policy on nursing care for the elderly that was swiftly derided as a "dementia tax" and in the final days repeatedly hammered May for cutting 20,000 police officers during her tenure as interior minister - an assertion that carried weight as major terrorist attacks hit Manchester and London.
