It runs from Friday to Sunday.

Street parties, picnics, concerts and gatherings will prove the MP's motto that "we have far more in common than that which divides us".

"Everyone got into the spirit of it and we met new people we hadn't met before".

Jo Cox's widower has said his family has not been broken by her murder ahead of the first anniversary of the MP's death.

The aim of The Great Get Together is to connect people and build stronger communities.

In other areas, Kirklees' arts partners Creative Scene is bringing Ska band The Baghdaddies to Cleckheaton's Memorial Park from 1pm-3pm on Saturday, June 17 while Cleckheaton Churches Together is organising a Picnic in the Park to bring all sections of the community together.

He said: "She would have loved this thing".

The day is family friendly day and all are welcome.

"I think seeing their mom, and clearly knowing that life wasn't there anymore, helped them move to that next stage", he said.

Mair was jailed for life after being convicted of her murder at the Old Bailey in November a year ago.

"That shock was personal for politicians but it was profound I think for all of us because it was a terrible, violent act, like so much else that happens in the world, and made us focus on the things that divide people rather than the things that bring us together".

"I think we're getting through, maybe it will take a while but the message will get through".

"Politics at the moment is so divisive".

"We are hearing about new events all the time, and there will no doubt be many that just happen spontaneously". "So it's not as if today is actually very different for us in lots of ways".

The murdered MP's parents, Jean and Gordon Leadbeater, said the thousands of events being held across the United Kingdom in Mrs Cox's memory would help to send out a message of hope.

He added: "Community groups have started working together much more".

"And with The Great Get Together, what we've got is a reason to come together that isn't a bad reason".

Bridget Phillipson, MP for Houghton and Sunderland South, said: "Jo dedicated her life to public service and paid the ultimate price for striving to build a more inclusive society".

There will also be tea and cake and food from the Thai Community, all free of charge.

All three bishops in the diocese of Blackburn have issued a joint statement encouraging people to join in the festivities.

"That shock was personal for politicians but it was profound I think for all of us because it was a awful, violent act, like so much else that happens in the world, and made us focus on the things that divide people rather than the things that bring us together".

"We have prayed God's Kingdom values of justice, love and peace and the Gospel of Jesus Christ might transform the hearts of people who would sow hatred and fear".

Visitor experience manager Dan Trotman said: "This is a fantastic opportunity to bring people and families together and celebrate all that we have in common".

The Great Get Together has also organised rivals to work together temporarily for the event.
