Diego Costa resigned to Chelsea exit but keen on rejoining Atletico Madrid

Vera Richards | 18 June, 2017, 02:27

Former club Atletico are Costa's favoured next club but their transfer ban for the illegal signing of underage players complicates matters somewhat with any signing made this summer unable to be registered to play until January.

Costa dropped a bombshell following Spain's 2-2 draw with Colombia last week when he told reporters that Conte had messaged him to tell him he does not figure in the Chelsea manager's plans for next season. The club would need to find a team to loan him out to for six months until Atletico's ban is over and they can register him to play.

Speaking in the mixed zone, the 28-year-old said: "I'm a Chelsea player, but they do not want me there.

I get on very well with everyone and that speaks for itself", he told Cadena SER after Spain's 2-1 win over Macedonia on Sunday.

Paper Round's view: We're sure Costa has had a fair bit of interest; after all, he was one of the league's top scorers last season.

He declared: "I'm a Chelsea player but they do not want me there".

After a midseason fallout over a proposed move to China - Costa missed a victory at Leicester City in January due to a "back problem" before being reinstated to the team - Conte has decided that enough is enough and the eccentric, and often fractious, Costa must move on.

"My relationship with the coach has been bad this season", said Costa.

"It would be complicated to not play for four or five months, but people know that I love my teammates at Atletico very much", he concluded.

Conte is also said to be interested in having another crack at signing Marco Verratti after missing out on signing him during his stint at Juventus.

Spain worldwide Diego Costa "has many offers" as he prepares to leave Chelsea this summer, says the striker's brother. I am still waiting for the club's decision'. "If it was a fair fight [for a starting position], I would consider staying, but if it's not I have to leave". He comes with Premier League experience, which would make him a better option than someone like Alvaro Morata.

Costa has scored 58 times in 120 games for Chelsea, landing two Premier League titles in the process.

Asia has, however, been ruled out as a possible destination ahead of next summer's World Cup. Antonio Conte's arrival did not help Costa's cause, who was linked to exits throughout the season.

Paper Round's view: With a reported price tag of £20 million, Pereira could be a good bit of business for Spurs, who are apparently hoping to land around £40m for Walker.
