An Indiana girl has died after her parents and doctors believe she was bitten by a tick that was carrying Rocky Mountain spotted fever.

She was taken to the emergency room twice for strep throat and released.

She said Kenley was admitted to Riley Hospital for Children last Tuesday after her high fever didn't break.

"She had a 104 degree fever and that fever remained about a 103.8 all week long up until her untimely death on Saturday morning", Kirby said.

There are more than 3,000 cases of Rocky Mountain spotted fever in the United States each year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Rocky Mountain spotted fever may have killed their 2-year-old. "That their baby girl is gone now". She also had a brain infection, swollen hands and rashes covering her body.

Kenley's family said the toddler loved to play outside, and relatives had no idea where she may have picked up a tick.

"She just glowed everywhere she went", said Kenley's aunt, Jordan Clapp.

"At (the hospital), she closed her eyes and she never opened them again", said Clapp. Tests are expected to confirm within two weeks whether Kenley died from Rocky Mountain spotted fever.

"For most people, it may cause an itchy red spot on the skin, which is fairly normal as far as tick bites go", Brian Todd, of the health department, said.

But on Sunday the devastated family posted an update which read: 'We are very sad to inform everyone that Kenley has become an angel.

As tick populations swell this summer, parents grow increasingly anxious about Lyme disease, a unsafe infection spread by the blood-sucking parasites. If not treated right away with antibiotics, there is a high death rate associated with the disease.

Summer is almost here, and it's bringing fears of a rare tick-borne disease called Powassan.

Symptoms include fever, headache, abdominal pain, vomitting and muscle pain.

Keeping grass trimmed and plants cropped around homes are good practices to prevent ticks.

"If at the end of the day, you bathe or shower with a washcloth, you pretty much dislodge any tick that is not yet attached", Sood said.
