Dozen frustrated Dems face steep challenge to unseat Pelosi

President Donald Trump speaks during a bill signing event for the Dozen frustrated Dems face steep challenge to unseat Pelosi

The criticism toward Pelosi is not new but the recent backlash against her led some liberals to reiterate their support for the long-time party leader. He's referring to Pelosi pointing out that it's hardly time for Democrats to panic, that contrary to media narratives, they're not doing too shabby, at all.

It's understandable: Republican ads in Georgia painted the Democrat, Jon Ossoff, as sure to be a Pelosi pawn - a charge that has scored for the GOP in race after race over the last decade. But in the second half of her 15 years as caucus leader, the Democrats in the House have been in a steady decline, losing the House majority in 2010, and continuing to lose seats. According to CNN, Pelosi has helped the Democratic Party raise some $568 million since 2002.

Pelosi defended herself Thursday, calling herself a "master legislator".

She dismissed the members who have said it is time for a change as "blatantly self-serving" and "having fun on TV".

A defiant Pelosi told reporters Thursday that she was "very confident" about the support that she had from fellow Democrats who now number 193. "I love the fray". After Hillary Clinton's loss to Donald Trump last November, a significant crop of Democratic lawmakers attempted to vote her out.

But Pelosi's camp signaled she is taking the grumbling seriously.

Pelosi's defensive comments came as Democrats remained angry and divided after throwing some $30 million into a House race in Georgia on Tuesday only to end up with a loss that wasn't even very close.

There's also an even more basic reality: Showing that the party will dump its leader if Republicans are persistently negative enough about that leader only gives the GOP more incentive to use aggressive tactics - and puts the next Democratic leader on tepid ground from the outset. Allies and grassroots supporters were sent suggested tweets Thursday that urged Democrats not to ditch Pelosi in the middle of a high-stakes legislative battle over the future of health care reform. "They always want to choose our leaders and usually they go after the most effective leaders because they want to diminish the opportunity that we have", Pelosi said.

At least a dozen Democrats attended the confab including Congressional Black Caucus Chairman Cedric Richmond (La.), Tony Cardenas (Calif.), a member of House Democratic leadership, and Reps.

President Trump's chaotic first five months in office have driven his popularity ratings down, leading some Democrats to see Americans as coming around to their way of thinking. Among those: Adding No. 2 roles to be filled by newer members on every House standing committee and adding six regional vice chairs to the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. Instead, Pelosi had to spend time defending her continued leadership of the Democratic caucus.

"If we take back the House in 2018, then I think she'd stay leader", said Rep. Ruben Gallego, D-Ariz.

"Of course I'm open to a meeting" with Pelosi", Moulton said.
