A 48-year-old white man was wrestled to the ground by members of the public and arrested at the scene on suspicion of attempted murder.

At least one man died and 10 others were injured in the attack, which police are now treating as a "terrorist incident".

- The Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, said "the appalling attack on Muslims in Finsbury Park is an attack on us all and on the culture and values of our country".

The Metropolitan Police said that one man was pronounced dead at the scene and ten others were injured. Police said he was already receiving first aid when the attack unfolded.

Britain's terrorist alert has been set at "severe" meaning an attack is highly likely. A vehicle struck pedestrians near a mosque in north London early Monday morning.

Speaking at the scene she said: "This was quite clearly an attack on Muslims who looked like they were probably Muslims and they were coming from a prayer meeting".

London, one of Europe's great cities, is in the midst of the sort of crisis not seen since the 7/7 bombings in 2005.

The group's general secretary, Harun Khan, said that eyewitnesses saw the van driver hit a number of Muslims.

Nearby, evening prayer services had just concluded at the larger Finsbury Park Mosque, which had been associated with extremist ideology for several years after the 9/11 attacks in the United States. "He did what he did deliberately to hit and kill as many Muslims as possible, so he is a terrorist".

"All my thoughts are with the victims, their families and the emergency services on the scene", the Prime Minister said earlier. Police are now investigating if his death connected to attack.

Police have said they are handling "a major incident" adding that more police officers have been deployed to beef up security especially for people observing Ramadan.

The suspected attacker - described as a white man with "loads of tattoos" - allegedly shouted "I'm going to kill all Muslims" as he rammed into the congregation. In March, a lone attacker drove his vehicle into people on Westminster Bridge, then fatally stabbed a police officer at the gates of Parliament. His attack killed five people.

Opposition Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn said on Twitter: "I'm totally shocked at the incident at Finsbury Park".

The council tweeted that its prayers were with the victims.

But Kacimi said there was no need for the community to panic, because police and government officials have been "very, very supportive".

"We hear about radicalization in mosques", said Zara, who like many local residents declined to give CNN her last name.

The problem of course is that even though the extreme-right promote the exact same kind of hatred and division as the Islamist extremists, and crave the same violent ideological conflict, they're treated much less seriously by western society than the Islamist hate preachers.

The incident came after two terror attacks in London in the past three months involving vehicles ploughing into crowds of people, as well as the suicide bombing attack at a Manchester pop concert in May.

On May 22, a suicide attack killed 22 people and injured almost 60 after an Ariana Grande concert in Manchester.

On March 22, a man killed five people after he drove a auto into pedestrians on Westminster Bridge in London and stabbed a policeman to death.
