Federer wins Halle Open tennis title

Roger Federer: Federer wins Halle Open tennis title
Vera Richards | 26 June, 2017, 02:02

The 18-time Grand Slam champion was surprised by German veteran Tommy Haas on his return from the two-month break last week in Stuttgart but brushed off any doubts over his form in Halle.

The Croatian had grabbed the only break of the match to take the first set, but could not convert either of two break point chances in the second set.

Federer was serving for the match but he was broken by the 21-year-old Russian. Twenty minutes in, Federer had three set points.

"Zverev was a little nervous in the first game as Federer made a decision to receive first, and that's understandable, but then all of a sudden the Swiss was a break up". "The future belongs to him", Federer said. He uses slice, he comes in, he chips and charges, he loops the ball and serves/volleys a little bit, so he's really going to throw everything at me. "It was a hard match".

This will be the third meeting between the two, with the score now tied at one apiece. Things can happen, things can change, if he has tough matches en route, he might feel it physically in the final.

The Czech was playing her fifth match since the stabbing she suffered at her home in Prostejov six months ago.

But for now, Federer will rightly revel in his glory, beating a near-certain future champion in Halle, and can now turn his attention to chasing an eighth Wimbledon crown.

Swiss maestro Roger Federer on Sunday came out with a ruthless performance as he defeated Alexander Zverev in straight sets to win the men?s singles title of the Gerry Weber Open. Already having displayed fine tennis at the tournament this week, Federer appears to be ready for Wimbledon.

"I'm still just very happy how I was able to close it out in the (tie-) breaker", said the 35-year-old. "I'll prepare myself the best I can, but he's definitely the favourite in that match". "I'm still just very happy how I was able to close it out in the tie-breaker. t was perhaps not always very lovely to watch, but it's good to be in the final in the second tournament after my return", said the Swiss Master, via Fox Sports.
