Former TSA boss among candidates for FBI director

Christy Curtis | 01 June, 2017, 01:54

The former CT senator flashed a thumbs-up as he left the White House after the interview Wednesday, saying he and Trump had a "good meeting".

Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, James Comey testifies in front of the Senate Judiciary Committee during an oversight hearing on the FBI on Capitol Hill May 3, 2017.

Fired FBI Director James Comey is now available to testify before Congress about his interactions with President Trump after speaking with Robert Muller, the special counsel leading the investigation of Russian election meddling, a source familiar with the matter told CBS News' Andres Triay.

Fired FBI director James Comey plans to testify publicly in the Senate as early as next week to confirm bombshell accusations that President Donald Trump pressured him to end his investigation into a top Trump aide's ties to Russian Federation, a source close to the issue said Wednesday. The investigation is now being led by a special counsel.

The interviews mark a re-start of sorts for the search to find someone to replace Comey, who Trump fired on May 9.

Pistole's name surfaced early in speculation of who might be tapped because of his extensive law enforcement experience and strong reputation across both sides of the political aisle.

He is also close to Coats, the former U.S. Senator from IN who is now director of national intelligence.

Pistole is now the president of small Christian college Anderson University, located in his hometown of Anderson, Indiana. After the September 11, 2001, terror attacks, ran the agency's counterterrorism division in Washington, D.C. In 2004, he was named deputy director - the FBI's No. 2 position. Pistole moved on to be TSA administrator for President Barack Obama from 2010 until 2014.

"Trump's first foreign trip was a huge success", tweeted White House spokesman Michael Short.

Spicer would not say whether the two men were the only ones now under consideration, or if they were considered finalists.

A representative of Anderson University said Pistole was not available for comment Tuesday, and Wray did not immediately return an email message seeking comment.
