Sen. Sanders added, "I am sickened by this despicable act". Suzanne Hodgkinson, the wife of a gunman who shot and wounded a top Republican congressman and several others, said her husband went to Washington, D.C. because he wanted to work on tax policy.

Law enforcement officials continued Friday to analyze Hodgkinson's social media activities and examine his Belleville, Ill., home.

"I was under the impression he was going down there to protest", said his niece, Michelle Travous.

The shooter's widow refused to answer questions about her husband's politics.

The FBI says Hodgkinson left his IL home months ago, and he was living out of a van in Alexandria, where he frequented the YMCA, and even engaged in conversations with the former mayor. She was flanked by a local county deputy when standing in front of a plethora of microphones.

James Hodgkinson, 66, a former home-inspection businessman, had been charged with domestic violence in 2006 but was not convicted and had a number of minor convictions on his record.

Before James Hodgkinson left his home in Belleville, Ill., in March, he sold almost everything he owned from his businesses.

She said when he prepared to leave Illinois, "He sold nearly everything he owned from his businesses".

In 2011, Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.) was shot by a crazed man whose mental health had been deteriorating in the months leading up to the violent attack. Three others were also shot and suspect James T. Hodgkinson was killed by police.

Other media outlets reported earlier Thursday that an AR-15 was used in the shooting, which was not confirmed by the Federal Bureau of Investigation or Washington D.C. Police at the time.

But she maintained there was nothing she could have done about it.

The couple had been married for about 30 years.

Pelosi pointed out that she herself has faced verbal attacks and threats aplenty, including phone calls to her home she blamed on ads critical of her that are airing now in a Georgia House district where a hard-fought special election will take place next week. She said he sold nearly everything from his businessese prior to leaving. He had run out of money, his wife told reporters.

GOP members were practicing for the game Wednesday when a gunman opened fire at an Alexandria, Va., ballfield.

Hodgkinson is believed by investigators to have been a person "of strong views", a senior USA official said.

"I just want you to all go away and leave my neighbors in peace". "They don't deserve this, I don't deserve this, my daughters don't deserve all this".

In the immediate aftermath of the Arlington shooting during practice for a Congressional baseball game, little was known about the shooter who took out his political frustrations with bloodshed.
